How to dent the helmet?

Hello everyone, I am a first time costume builder and have a couple questions. I want to build a Boba Fett helmet out of Eva foam. Any tips for working with foam would be awesome. But how do you make the dent? Are any layers added on the inside to get the depth?

I think doing it out out of Eva foam would be far more tricky, than for instance using thin wetted cardboard cut to fit with grooves to make it fit well. I went that approach and used bondo on it for my first scratch build, and it went well for what it is. For a screen accurate dent I recommend 3D printed versions to insert.
