Update

The 'aged' version of the molds is making good pulls. Ive pulled about 5 from it, and have the process down to minimal flaws in the finish surface.

Heres a pic of the pulls. One with a bonded silver flake coating, that makes it look metal. The other in onyx black rubber.

These have actually been the preferred pieces to everyone ive shown, because they look used. The new ones are super clean, and I think they look like stormtrooper plastic instead of fett metal. But ill let you be the judge when I get the pulls up.

The pictuers arent the greatest, poor light on my pool table, but i think it shows well enough where it is.

Im working on the 'cube bubble padding'. I sculpted and sanded them, but they didnt have the right 'shape' They were missing something. So I sculpted them again, and put them inside of balloons!

The hard foam, inside of the baloon, giave it a nice finish, and gave it the 'air filled' look i couldnt accomplish by sculpting with an exacto knife.

I had to get tin based silicone to then mold it, as latex and platinum dont like each other.

Now im making the run offs of them, and testing a black paint to make sure it works with the silicone i have. The blocks should be about done today.

I also ordered some other, softer foams, to test because this foam is maybe a little firm with the rubber. To get good shape they are compressed 5-7 lb/ft im going to try the 'nerf foam' in the next batch, which is a little softer.

Im currently 'part shopping' for found pieces that are close in size to the internals of your riddell.

The hardest part about the riddell is that a real head wouldnt fit into it. Theres too much padding/parts filling the internal the way the scale helmet by riddell is. Im going to have to make the padding slimmer, and the parts slimmer.

Also, most dont use a construction helmet, so im going to have to make a 'forehead' set of foam pieces, to offset the rear padding in the helmet. The rear padding, without something to help you keep your head centered would squish your face to the visor. We dont want that.

Ill have some of the pieces laid out before I leave for portugal, but it wont get complete till I get back, i leave on the 9th.

Heres the pics of the V1 (dirty) kit installed. The V2 is in silicone. The v3 is on my bench (RIddell)

I decided to go with a leather look on the rubber. Darker skin with lighter center foam. It gave it a 'realistic' look right out of the mold. The top pictures are flat black as they exit the mold. The bottom is with a 1 minute rub and buff on it.

The top center piece may need to be thinner, and a forehead piece needs to be made. Maybe just an extra leather piece, to cut and use all over.

They look better in a painted gray or black interior, but I wanted it to stand out exactly what you were looking at/getting

nice, Mason, nice...one question on these...how does a resin mq-1 work with these liners? is that piece you have there where the slots are in the back an alternative for the mq-1? does it go over the existing mq-1 board? or, does yours even need to be there, if you have the mq-1? just curious, brother...excellent work, and so wanting one!!

i really like the realistic look to them...how soft are these? will they mold to your head when you put on the helmet? sheesh, i said one question, didnt i...

They are a nerf football with some thin rubber to stop it from flaking over it. The padding pieces are REALLY soft. The circuit pieces are a little firmer.

I made the rear piece big enough to be hollowed out for the MQ1 board.

It should fully encase it. You would have to hollow it out carefully with a razor or scizzors. I could probably made one that makes it hollow, but it wouldnt be very soft then.

The V2 are a little less detailed, so a little softer, but not as weathered looking.

The V3 are going to be real close to the riddell pieces. Im still working out the dimensions to make them fit perfectly in most helmets.

The pieces can also be trimmed thinner to go in smaller helmets.

About 1/4 inch on all pieces can be taken off without losing detail.

awesome, brother!! how are you making them stick inside the helmet? i am so full of it tonight, arent i? but seriously, what adhesive are you using, and can any jo schmo like myself install these bad boys?

Inside the helmet theres a couple options.

I used double sided tape, the foam core type. Heres why.

It sticks well to the resin. Not very well to the foam. BUT i superglue the foam to tape.

This way, it doesnt move AT ALL, but if you want to take it out, you can split the foam core tape with a razor blade.

Now, my ears are held on with TNUTS and bolts/rubber washers. So each place one stuck through, i used the tips of scissors to snip a little spot out. You cant feel them.

The only problem so far with these, is I dont think anyone is going to want the rear piece in while trooping. The sides are PERFECT.. Super soft and hold nicely. But the back piece makes your nose close to the front.

In all my helmets I never put pad right in the rear. I put the 'stabilizer' piece of foam on the forehead above the visor.

Im going to put in the rear piece with velcro, so I can put it in when its on display, and take it out to troop. For the super serious, like my son, he will tell people 'this is my power pack im putting in'. The top piece some will use some will not also while trooping, my heads tall so I dont need it. Im going to cut it down to about half height and it will work much better. I may put the circle piece, right on my forehead to cushion.

Personally I think that these will need a third leather looking piece, to be cut up and used all over the helmet for fitting purposes.

Im going to pull 2-3 sets tonight/tomorrow before i leave for europe tuesday to use up my rubber. So ill get a good idea of what else needs to be done to them then.

Looking good!!!!!!!!!! You've also thought about adjustment details which is great. I had a problem with previous interiors being too bulky and not fitting my small to average noggin in with them.

Thanks brother Ive been busy. the V2 (clean new looking model) just got pulled from the oven. I cleaned up the mold, and im making a set of the new ones as we speak.

They are more of a TK style. No grit. No corrosion. Perfectly symmetrical.

Im trying a new foam however, so theres no guarentee this first pull will come out. Its softer, and more expensive, more 'nerf' ish. But if it makes the product feel better while still looking as good, its worth it.

I guess the question is do you want a riddell versionor one of these?

If you want one of these as the one I owe you for lending me the helmet, i can send it before i leave for portugal next week.
