hot water would probably work as well. as for weathering the gloves, most techniques for weathering the other soft parts should work. i'd personally use a few light washes made of really watered down acrylic hobby paint, i like apple barrel paints from walmart for weathering (brown, grey, and black but if you think other types of dirt and grime are appropriate, use other colors accordingly) and apply with a brush.
