ROTJ - back panel colours ?

crimson

Hunter
Hi all

I am painting the Rspropmasters ROTJ Helmet (its massive) lots of resizing issues, paint =Humbrol

Whole helmet was base coated in metallic silver 11 (humbrol)

now i have Rafal works templates there are 3 silvers

SP Lark Dark Grey
Bright Silver
Base Metal

I am confused because the template describes base metal as a darker metal,

The 3 silvers i have are:

Metallic silver 11 (base of the helmet)
Metallic Gunmetal 53
Grey 67

I bought these based on the Jigglenomicon Guide ,

What is what colour ? and what order do i put them down in please ?

In my eyes =

Bright silver is 11

not sure on the other two ?

One really difficult thing when painting up a helmet is trusting the colors. The colors alone may look off, but once put together on the helmet and dried the colors will look different. I know I fought the same issues when I was painting up my ROTJ helmet. It just didn't look right to me and I tried to start adjusting..........in the long run I ended up going back to the recommended colors and they looked right.

Bright silver should be the 11
Base metal should be the 53
and Grey is Grey 67

Some one with more painting experience feel free to correct me.

thanks dude i had no idea i knew bright silver was 11

the paint up looks very hard any tips ? how do you blend looks like a lot of masking work ?

I dont want to get it wrong the colours are so similar

What do you recommend as the base green ? = 117, or 78 and 76 mixed 1:1 ?

It is a ton of masking work. I initially tried to do too much at once. Then I backed off and did small sections at a time.

As far as the green I used the Grey 31 Green 78 mix but I didn't mix it as lopsided as is recommended. I used more green than it said......... I liked the way it turned out.

Thanks - I have not tried that mix, i have those paints so will give that mix a shot when i get home,

What coat do you recommend a lot of people are using satin coat, but when i check it drys to a shine wouldn't Matt be more appropriate ?

Humbrol Satin Cote 28ml - AC5401
A solvent-based varnish that goes on clear and dries clear, overcoming the yellowing effect associated with traditional varnishes. The product dries to a smooth, mid-sheen satin/eggshell finish.

Humbrol Matt Cote 28ml - AC5601
A solvent-based varnish that goes on clear and dries clear, overcoming the yellowing effect associated with traditional varnishes. The product dries to a smooth, low-sheen matt finish.

Just ordering my paints now as Humbrol charge £5 for delivery

Crimson,

I laid/misted the colors down in order using the reference pics, including the red, gold, and black, according to Jayvee's tutorial and the reference pics on this site in the photo gallery from exhibits. Following that, I used steel wool and a razor to remove said layers and achieve the damage effect. On the helmet's left ear (non rangefinder ear), there is over spray on the bottom edge, and where it meets the helmet. The gold is subtle, but I can see the hues on the exhibit photos, and it's not over the entirety of the ears so spray accordingly. The black is also in there, albeit subtle, and used to darken up some of the darker shades on the ears as well.
