Masking fluid

Where do you guys go to buy masking fluid, I went to wal-mart and no luck. Home Depot, Lowes where? And what does it cost? Starting a practice run on a trash helmet to learn technique.
thanks

Humbrol maskol is what you want. Just do yourself a favor and grab some off ebay. Where local hobby shops are getting harder and harder to find, and they don't all carry a full line of humbrol products. Your best bet would be to make one large online purchase of all the colors you'll need.

Michaels, and AC Moore, even Joanne fabrics, will carry winsor and newton masking fluid. But it dries way too clear and is really hard to see what you've already done. It will work in a pinch, but not ideal by any means.

Thanks guys as always. I'll check the hobby lobby we have here in Vegas and a couple other local shops and if not order on-line.

I guess I'll be be a dissenting opinion on the Winsor & Newton fluid. :) Yes, it's clear when it dries,
but I haven't had any difficulty in using it. I've had one bottle for at least 5 years and it's still
perfectly viable. I think it cost about $12 when I bought it.

I'm not saying its not useable. Just saying the humbrol is easier to see, especially for a beginner. If I had as many helmets under my belt as you do, I'd be more comfortable using the W/N masking fluid. ;)

I've used the WN and had mixed reactions with it. I have seen the pics where it appears that the humbrol stands out pretty good when painted over. The WN can be very difficult to locate when you're trying to find all the little specks.

Exactly. It's all user preference really. I honestly haven't used the humbrol stuff, just the winsor and newton fluid and I WISHED I had the humbrol. Especially when it came to masking silver.

I've used a couple of different ones and have gone with the humbrol because it happened to be cheapest at the time and so I bought lots of the stuff and I'll be using it for a while.because of that but if I run out and there's something cheaper I won't hve a problem with it.

The clearer drying ones I have used have been fine as well but I don't understand the point that humbrol is easier to find when it's been painted over and that hasn't been my experience. Those tiny specks are hard to find whatever is used. When masking over it is true that the humbrol does stand out more and that can be advantageous for obvious reasons but it's impossible to see what's underneath once it is down and in fact the clearer drying stuff can be better when re masking over areas that contain a lot of fine detail. Swings and roundabouts if you ask me..... but I would think that SJ's work speaks for itself.

Ah, so is it a matter of thickness/consistency? For those who have used products other
than W&N, is the Maskol (or other brand) thicker, making it stand off the surface more?
I can understand that that property might make it a bit easier to use.

I bought my Winsor & Newton at Hobby Lobby with a 40% off coupon you can get online. I added some food coloring to it which made it a little easier to see. It is a little thin though.

I tried the windsor but it got lost when painted over. I think I will use some of the templates here and paint it all by hand with testors paints.

Yeah, I never had a problem with the thickness. After I put my paint on I could see the raised area where I had applied the mask. I don't think there's any mask that's not going to get covered up with paint.
