When I was doing boot camp, they showed us Full Metal Jacket just to warm us up. Very funny. But that Kubrick movie is like a summer camp compared to reality, so if you want to join voluntarily (I was forced) - think it over THREE MORE TIMES, stupid

Thanks for the advise (although a little late ). Been there and done it. 3 years in the British regular forces and then 15 years in the Territorial Army (and now i teach young cadets). This dressing up stuff is far more fun though
Jon, what ruck are you talking about? If you need the ALICE load carrying rucksack, I might be able to help you. The pic below is what I am talking about..

No problem - one of the worst things I know are those who idealise and think soldiering is "fun" without even having been there. No sane guy would want to be a soldier. But as I see you come from probably the nastiest guys out there (the UK guys without teeth) you're excused in my book :cheers
Nice to meet another VN historian. I started on a impression in late 07... I've got just about everything, including a real M-16A1 Colt 603.
Check it...

This was at the Ren Fair last year.
This was an earlier picture, before I got the flack jacket
And here's my rifle. I built it up from all original colt parts, except the lower is a reproduction and all the internal lower parts and BCG are new. Fires great!
And here's the real one next to the Airsoft I use when at Cons, etc.
TD-1536 - man those pics are sweet. How do you get on wearing your flak jacket? Do you wear it on patrols?
Lovin the M16, its the dogs nuts (mine is only blank firing)

Yeap, I went with 7th Air Cav, 1st battalion, circa 1968 - all my gear, rifle and even the soles on my reproduction boots match that year. I love the flack vest, got it on ebay for about $80, but I'd been watching them on and off for about a year and just got lucky. I ususally wear it every time we troop, or sometimes we'll change it up... maybe only wear a t-shirt and the vest, because as you know, it get's hot as hell.
Currently, the three guys you see are those in my 501st Garrison. I've not reached out to gather more troops for our group, but Vietnam reenacting seems to be gaining in popularity around these parts. But, I still don't know how I feel about doing that sort of thing and haven't taken any steps to get involved.
I hear what you are saying buddy. I am into it more for the living history side rather than the reenactment. I am currently with a group called the United kingdom Air Cavalry (see the link below) http://www.ukaircav.org/index.htm
Glad you only got your flak vesy for $80m, I ended up paying just over $300 (import duties from the States :cry ), but like you I love it (my flak jacket and my lid are my fav bits of kit). Oh and the M16
