JB project / FP V3 armor

As most of you know TDH will be presenting Jeremy Bulloch with his very own ESB Fett Costume. I am very excited to have the opportunity to paint Mr. Bulloch's armor.

I want to thank BATNINJA for doing all the trim work on this armor. He did a excellent job!!:thumbup:thumbup

So far I have done the primer and the silver

This will be a little slower than normal due to the fact I am painting 3 sets of armor at the same time...JB's, mine and Philip Wise.

    Let the games begin!!

    Awesome!!

what silver are you using? Also, are you sanding down the plastic first?

Batninja sanded the plastic after he trimmed the armor

The silver I am using is Krylon Metallic from Hobby Lobby....Spideyfett suggested this for me.

    Thank you.

Yep - that's what I use. Just wanted to make sure I'm using the same thing the masters are using.

I hear the drum roll ...

Can't wait to see this Jason! So, being that you put down a silver layer, are you going full layered with this? Or topical after this step? Just curious.

The trim-up looks fabulous Eric !

    Wow! great start DM...
I'm gonna do the same method 'layered Silver only' then the remainder topical... keep up the good work bud!

That looks really great so far. I'm going to be watching this post like a hawk as I'm hoping it will help me out when it comes time to do my ESB FP V3 armour. I know you listed the silver as Krylon Metallic, but is there any chance you could list what other colours you're using as well? This would be a huge help for me.

    Keep up the great work!

    update....

I have been working on masking off the silver and this part is a slow process

I have outlined the silver with a light pencil and then applied masking fluid

Hopefully I will be able to get the GREEN on this weekend....

Re: JB project / FP V3 armor

    Now the FUN begins......

This afternoon I made a trip over to our friendly neighborhood SPIDEYFETTS house to get some HELP on weathering JB's armor.

I must admit that yours truly has never done ESB armor...only ROTJ...and since OLD SPIDEYFETT has done some excellent ESB I felt the need to get his help.:thumbup:thumbup:thumbup

So to make a long story short I simply handed over the armor to Alex and watched him do his magic. The pics you see below really does not ever come close to showing off the GLORY of the weathering that was done. In person it is INCREDIBLE. For those of you that will be coming down to Dallas for the JB presentation you will get to see what I mean.

Spidey...thanks man..today was a educational experience for me in the ART of ESB armor!!!

Tomorrow the Masking comes off and we will take a look at our SILVER!!!

    then on to the Yellow!!!

Since I've recieved a few PMs asking about paint colors, I thought I would go ahead and post what was used.

This will be listed in the correct stages in which me and DM painted the armor:

After applying the base Silver, "Kylon Metallic Silver" to be exact, and masked the scratches....

1.THE BASE COAT: US.MEDIUM GREEN (PollyScale acrylic)
Yes, the same color that is used for the ROTJ or SE version of the armor.
Reason I choose this color as the base was because allot of people tend to think there's just one "magic" color applied and then from there you go straight to weathering, when really there's a ton of Misting involved...which ends up changing the over all color hue completely. And US Medium Green has a good base hue.

    2. Next color applied: To create the dark greenish gray tones, I MISTED DUNKELGRUN RLM 82 (Model Master enamel), I think this is what Jango's Kid and a few others recommend:thumbup..GREAT COLOR....but I've seen this used as a Base color, IMO that is not correct... I use it to create tones only.

    3. Third color applied: To create the highlights in the armor, misted.......here it comes..........................PANZER OLIVE GREEN (Polly Scale acrylic), same color used on the helmet. Sometimes I use this color and mix a touch of Cobalt Blue to add that teal tone....cough cough, hint hint....

    4. Forth color applied: to create the deeper/ darker tones, I mist GRIMY BLACK (Polly Scale acrylic)....looks dark gray....and I normally mist this over the same areas that I misted the Dunkelgrun Rlm 82...

    5. Final color : This is just an accent color, a very lightly misted WASH in certain areas.. FRENCH EARTH BROWN (Polly Scale acrylic)......

    6. Yellow scratches that will be added: Yellow Zinc Chromite

    7. Chest Diamond: Yes it is a DIFFERENT color than the armor on ESB.... I used CNW GREEN (Polly Scale)

Again addtional weathering is needed once everything is applied....that's where the fun begins..... and just a tip, use extra fine steal wool to help blend once all the colors are applied AND DRIED!! ...not to much though, you don't want to take off all the work you just did...**and do this prior to adding the Yellow Zinc Chromite scratches.

and most important, and the best advise someone gave me once was..."PAINT WHAT YOU SEE ON THE REF PICS"...

Here's a quick pic I put together to illustrate some of the applications.

    Enjoy.

    EDIT : DUNKELGRUN 82

Heres a contrast color change I did in Photoshop, to give you an Idea of all the tones involved...this should also help with the placement of color aswell.

No it certainly does not appear that way does it

In the grand scheme of things, with so little reference on the ESB Fett, something that obscure wasn't worth the extra expense for making a second mold that LARGE (backplate mold that is). The mold was designed off of the couple of very tiny pictures that we do have of the whole backplate, and it was PrePro / ROTJ SE).

I figured the "ESB Purist" could fill in if it really bugged them. Sorry I forgot all about that Jason ! But the saving grace is ... it is that obscure. It really is a very minor difference that isn't worth losing any sleep over now that it is painted (if you don't want to fill it this late in the game that is )

    Sill looking amazing Jason !

Re: JB project / FP V3 armor

in the pic I was looking at the silver at the top near the collar.....if you noticed it appears to have a large silver area and so I added this to the armor

As far as the dent I did see that the pics dont have the dent but the FP armor did and I made the artistic decision to go ahead with it.

One thing to note is that Spideyfett is the guy that pretty much signs off on my work. We will look at this together and we may decide to remove that dent. Its a easy fix if we decide to do it.

I would venture to guess that even if you just decided not to paint that dent in and leave it green it would not be that noticeable anyway. Much easier than having to fill it in.

Uhm, Jason? You did remove the paint "IN" the dent first before filling, didn't you ?

*Sigh* I just can't please everyone

I think from this point forward, the backplate will be "Dentless" It's much cleaner looking to "add" a dent, rather than fill.

Hey come on FP... you know your work kicks butt, I think you can be forgiven for a little dent...
Given the amount of people on this board with their own way of perceiving things... you'd be hard pushed to please 'everyone'

Re: JB project / FP V3 armor

I personally think the back plate is fine the way it is...gives it Character..

As a matter of fact, with the help of a close friend of the project, we were able to get our hands on some production photos of Fett ESB shots that no one has ever seen before.........These pictures will be released, just not sure when.??... But after reviewing the extra shots I can tell you two things....FettPrides armor is EXTREMLY close in size and shape and dents etc etc... it's unreal how close he came!!!:thumbup......
And heres the kicker, the little red shoulder stud that everyone sees in the hall way scene in ESB with Fett, Lando, and Vader, well in these new shots NO RED Shoulder Studs....Clear as day.....so I don't know what it is we are all seeing in that scene??...again I can post the shot in a few months once they have been released, "Hopefully"

Great Work so far DM, and AWESOME armor FP...

    Cheers.

Maybe it's red lighting off camera that gives the hue of red.

Only other thing I could think of is that maybe for that scene, they put on a different set of studs?

Have to agree with that. As many "parts" that Fett has, they could've changed them out. We all know that continuity is the most important thing when it comes to the Star Wars films.

Or the backwards Fett in Jabba's palace.

You could give Jeremy an extra "red" one to change out if he see fit.

Perfect, we're using correct press keys anyway, so that shouldn't be no problem.. we have plenty of those..good call.

Re: JB project / FP V3 armor

I know it's no big deal guys

But in the interest of wanting this to be absolutely PERFECT for Jeremy, Jason and i have decided to replace the backplate with a "Dentless" copy

Spidey - thanks soo much for that !!! A little vindication goes a long way In all seriousness tho, I can't even describe how good it feels to know that the many hundred hours of eye strain and "do-overs" paid off big time on the new armor !!!

As far as the shoulder stud goes .. I think the pic that Jason posted shows what I've been theorizing. I believe that the red light was *added* , much like a laser blast, or lightsaber glow is added to the film in any particular fx scene. You can see in that pic, as with any "still" of a laser blast, or like the SE shot of "han Shooting first" .. it just looks FAKE Nevertheless .... it is, uh,how do they say ....

    SCREEN ACCURATE !!!

I took a screencap of the cod when Jeremy had the belts a little mixed up, you can see the upper damage.
