    FP Armor - Version 3

The time is finally here. There has been buz about it. I've hinted to it. There's a reason for it. I know I said that V.2 was final. I wish it could have been Sorry guys :o

Remember, all of the cool new stuff, and innovation you see, you saw it here first.

In the last 2 weeks, in between helmets, I decided to update the armor sculpts There is a pretty big event coming up at the beginning of the year that required my armor to be as good as it can be. More on that will be posted when the time comes, but it's certainly a once in a lifetime thing to be a part of.

A special thanks goes out to our own Spideyfett, Darthmiller, and Evan4218 for their contributions. They were the only members to get as close as they did at Cel 4 to the real AoSW Fett display (without plexi or glass). Darthmiller, as devoted as he is, even went out that day and forked out some serious cash for a beast of a camera to to make it possible to take the pics (Since everyone was caught off guard and didn't know the display was even going to be there) The crew made friends with the Prop Master and were allowed a few more liberties with the display than what's normal. This afforded us new information we've never had before. Although my armor was pretty close, there's always room for improvement. So, based on some great photo's, and measurements, and information, I've updated the armor to reflect these necessary tid bits. Of course I'll leave the final opinion to the community, but in my own opinion (not because I made them), unless screen pieces fall into someone's hands to get copies from, this will be the set that goes on my own suit/display when I start my new one next year.

I planned on doing this update sooner (about the time the FPH was conceived). Actually, the armor was to be first on the revamp list, but I decided to run with the FPH at the last minute. That turned into a 6 month long project This was back in April or May. So here we are. I got it in, under the wire of 2007.

Some have asked in recent weeks about the "Rubber Knees" that I promised a discount to members who purchased V.2 armor. This is still very much my intent. The delay in bringing those to life, was only because they needed to be updated .. in the following pics, those will be painfully obvious I think it's safe to say, that most of you will be glad that I waited to update before I went forward on that project

Here are the first few pics. Lets call them teaser pics I suppose. Because throughout the eveing, I will be adding more pics, and comps to the V.2. I will detail the changes that have been made to each piece (within reason of course). We'll call them "Highlights" If some of the armor looks funny (not what you're used to seeing) , it's not your eyes. This is what the stuff really looks like. Unfortunately, this is what the real stuff looks like in person too .... it's just not what we've come to expect, and so therefore may be a little surprising to some. I say, it looks "kinda funny" <in my best Wayne's world (Dana Carvey) voice>

So come back from time to time tonight. It could get interesting ... (there are a couple of neat surprises coming up)

I'm not the biggest expert on the differences, but I'm guessing ESB by the damage/dents...so the question for all the ROTJ'ers is whether there will be a ROTJ version.

From those pics I would say you nailed it. I am very interested to see what this would look like on a vest and how it sits on a persons chest. Awesome revisions bro. I am so glad you made them.

    Really nice. Very good work...

I'm dying to see it in person, (off course, get a set for myself :P), I'm sure this will be the last one, as you said.

Just 2 questions... out of curiosity... I know it's not an important piece but... are you going to make the "butt" piece already with the correct shape or will be like in the v2 ?? (have you think abuot making it already curved and with the accurate bevels/edges ???

And the kness ??.. are you going to make them curved ??? or like in v2, planes that need to be reshaped ??? (the problem with this method is that you take almost all the upper lip off :$:$:$... ) I would love to hear your thoughts about this .

    Once again, good work.

Ben - I will be posting all of the details later this evening. But just to touch on your question about the knees ... what you see int he pictures ... is how they come off of the mold. One piece, pre-curved, trim and wear

Thanks for the props everyone !

I've been dying to see someone do a buttplate that way as well. Hoping you might adress that....You're the man FP

Edit: on second thought though...I bet it would be tough to make a one-size fit all of that part. Some of us have big badonka-donks!!!

    Sorry I missed this ...

The set you see in the pictures is ESB. The only thing that really differentiates the two versions at this point are the dents on the left breast plate, and the shoulder bells (not shown yet).

The ESB set is actually what is on the AoSW exhibit (repainted in ROTJ colors). Also better known as the "SE" (Special Edition) - the Fett that appeared in the the extended scenes added to the revamped original trilogy movies, and most of the publicity shots (post production and release of SW). So TECHNICALLY ... it can go ESB, or ROTJ

YES!!!! I hope so as well... its a deep pull but no deaper then the back plate in my eyes. I hope to see this happen as well. Its obviously worked well for the trimmed and heated flat styrine to be used for the kidney armor but if were going for accurate here you need the lip on it like the real deal.

I know FP can do it.

I know what's accurate bro. The reasons that flat styrene have been included (for years) is for a very good reason. Certainly not because I didn't know any better

With the cost of Styrene on the rise, we have to look at this from a different standpoint. In an attempt to keep costs down to keep these kits affordable, some things need to be considered. Example ...

Kidney plate - needs to be approximately 23 -25 inches long to accommodate different shapes and sizes of people. In a 24 inch by 24 inch sheet of styrene, 6 kidney plates can be yielded. If they are vac formed, only one kidney plate per vac pull would be yielded. Even whith putting another mold on the table at the same tme, you still end up short in the end. Being that it is a virtually "hidden piece", it was the piece that 100 % accuracy was sacrificed until now. Beyond that, the flat styrene strips are technically stronger than the vac'd counterpart.

But all that set aside, who's to say I didn't already have this covered? When I said things like, "a few surprises", and I'll post the details this evening", could it have been because "'Ol FP" already had stuff like this covered? I just wanted to get a bite to eat, and take a nap

Thats unfortunate that it is such a hassle & unpractical to make that particular part. I still want one though!!

I know you know what is accurate bro, come on now... we talked about why you havnt offerend that kind of kidney armor twice on the phone over the past year.

I was just pressing that if it wasnt in your bag of surprises since I hadnt talked to you about your improvements since I gave you my feedback on the changes to be made to the V2 armor, you should do this, even if it was for a select few. An accurate fett means only a select few body types will work for it. Remember, you made me a custom ab plate because I dont fit the accurate build of the actor by about 5 inches.

Flexabilaty of your kit is a must for costumers. I know this better then most from my attempt and success of looking the part at 6' 6". Just wanted to make sure such an important detail had a chance of being offered.

    No offence meant bro.

FP this armor looks amazing. You said it might not look like what we are use to seeing, but I think it looks spot on from all the reference pictures I have seen. Awesome job on this. Please put me on the signup list for a complete ESB set when you start making them available.

I was wondering if you were going to do the center diamond like your v2 set with the metal piece set in from behind? I thought that looked great. I can't wait to see more pics.

Re: FP Armor - Version 3

Thanks for the comps guys !!

Lets get this party started !

First, the little surprises. Yes? Then the changes that were made to V.3 a little later. As well A few comps to V.2.

I've already been asked about how on earth are members going to attach their knee darts. My canned response was ... "Got it covered"

First, let me just address the new knees. I'm a firm believer that the original Fett knees were one piece vacuum formed. Period. There was some evidence of a knee guard being separate pieces, but I don't buy it. I believe this was a broken and "repaired" knee guard. There is plenty of substantial evidence that they were one piece formed. Such as the "webbing" between the front knee cap portion and the dart housing where they come together for instance, which if you haven't already noticed ... I replicated There is only one way to do this, and that is to form the whole knee in one piece. Why? Because the webbing is the product of failure to suck the plastic down into such a tiny little area. That's my take on it, and until further evidence or proof is presented, I'm sticking to it It's taken me 6 years to figure out how to make the dag-gone vac mold to do it ... and it's probably the most complex vac mold I've ever made ... but I think I proved that it can be done. For ILM, it must have been pure accident So why the "lead-in" ?

Darts. How to attach darts. Without them tearing the plastic apart if they get hooked on something (or a little kid runs runs into you at a con, and rips them off ). If the knees were separate pieces, this could explain why they've lasted for 30 years, because they could have had solid resin housings, like some makers have produced in past. But I still don't subscribe to that. So the whole idea is to mount the darts in a fashion that reinforces them too. My V.1 knees had inset sockets to mount the darts. WRONG. I've always sort of known it, but never could think of anything better. Until now. It's as simple, as simple gets. DON'T ask me how I came up with it

K, so follow me here ...

There are indentations on the outside of the vac formed dart housing. Pic #1. This is where you will cut holes to fit YOUR particular darts. So ... "Size matter not" anymore But what holds them in place?

An ultra light, virtually unbreakable resin support insert. Pic #2. This resin support insert, has matching indentations that line up PERFECTLY to the outside marks. Pic #3. With this support insert, you will drill holes to match the diameter of YOUR darts. Once you have matching holes in both the vac formed knee shell, and the support insert, the insert can be glued/epoxied inside of the dart housing, and then your darts can be fitted from the outside , and epoxied into place. VERY simple really. One thing is for sure, the darts will never rip the housing apart this way At any rate, these will be included with every kit.

Next on the agenda ... center chest diamond. I'm a firm believer that this was vac formed too. Let us not forget, that these guys were CHEAP when they were in pre-production ... because they HAD TO BE on such a tight budget. So I went back to the old days of my V.1 armor with this. Refreshed of course. Bo more resin. Unless you REALLY want one

But the cool thing, isn't as much the diamond, as it is the insert that will be included this time around. It's been known for quite some time that there was an actual insert glued into place. Including pieces of sheet steel with the V.2 to back the diamond, was a temporary solution to the following ..

Each kit will include this cold cast insert. (will not need to be polished). The trick to more difficult than it looks. Vacuum forming small detailed areas like that of the center rectangle of the diamond, teild very SOFT detail. Mor rounded on the inside, nothing flat to glue an inster into. So I devised a "stamp" to stamp a nice crisp "bed" for lack of a better term .. for the insert to sit flat inside and be affixed to.

Next up .... the ab plate detail. If you take a peek at the Super Troopes pics (white pre-pro Fett), you can see shining metal throw the three holes on the ab plate (as well as the center diamond by the way). They're not painted silver, that's for sure So again, a cold cast insert that you can glue to the inside of the ab plate after you've painted and detailed your ab plate.

K, that's about it for the time being. I've got to go and get dinner and play liek a human being for a couple of hours This itme I won't pas out.

Oh, wait .. one more thing ... "Your wish, is my command" .....

And I'm not ignoring anyone about details on the armor ... I will post all of that here pretty quick. As well as put up the list of members down for this run. Payments in advance, reserve your slot.

Great job on all of those details FP. I did something similar with my Jango knees, except it wasn't resin like that. I cut out holes in the outside piece so that the darts wouldn't put pressure on the plastic, and on the inside I made a piece that the darts actually attached to. The center diamond looks perfect as well. I really look forward to getting a set of this new armor. Keep up the awesome work.

Re: FP Armor - Version 3

Alrightythen ... here are the comparison pics, as promised

There's a lot to say. As usual. So I'll make it as brief as I can. I'm sure there will be some of you that probably don't care to here it, as the pictures may speak for themselves. But I feel that I should give a general rundown of some of the basic mods from V.2.

But first, a little bit of a reminder, or a small new tid bit of Fett education for our newer members here that may be trying to catch up .... as I've been asked nearly every day this week about "Fiberglass".

"Vacuum Formed Armor" is "Screen Accurate". Fiberglass is NOT. I did offer armor in fiberglass, very briefly in 2005. Yes, it is more durable, in some respects. In others, not so much. The chest armor for instance ... they just lay there. There is no reason for bullet proof there. Vac formed is lighter, and more comfortable. And they "flex" when necessary. Fiberglass does not. Knees in fiberglass, are just a very, very bad idea. I can go on. There are pro's and con's to both. Will I offer them in glass again in the future? Probably. But at the moment, I'm more interested in accuracy.

    Chest Armor -

New sculpt. They had to be. Modifying the exhisting vacuum form molds would have taken weeks because the concave changes were so drastic.

As I stated before, V.2 was pretty close. But mainly it lacked some dimension. They weren't flat by any means. But the real Fett armr is almost ridiculously shaped. I can honestly say, whoever sculpted the original vac molds for the screen uses Fett armor, must have sculpted them over David Prowse's body builder boobies

The other main problem with the chest plates in general, is that they were "compressed" in a manner of speaking. Because of 2 dimensional photos, and no real world reference until now So in implementing the new "dimension" to the armor, even the shapes changed .. pretty drastically. The reason for this is when you take a two dimensional shape, and put a compound curve in it ... the shape will appear to be smaller, and compressed. The shapes of the V.2 armor looked correct ... "straight on". But turning slighty to the right or left if you're looking at someone wearing the armor ... something happens. The bottom line is ... the armor shapes are a whole lot stranger looking than I would have expected if you were to imagine taking the real armor and "flattening" it out ... they would look like over exaggerated FP V.2 Armor So I had to reverse that . What this yielded were armor plates that not ended up being very much different in basic shape. As I stated before, the V.2 looked right straight on. But from any other angle, there's something wrong. The shapes had to be made larger, to average the plates out to the same size as the V.2 dimensionally, so they would still look right straight on Now, they look "right" from any dorection It seemed to all fall right in place ...

Other minor mods include, the DENTS obviously And you may not be able to see it in the pictures because it's stark white styrene, bit there is a "mound" onthe real chest plate around the chest light slots. It appears that this slight "mound" was sculpted in to help accommodate the chest lights themselves. This "mound" is now there. I can try to get a pic of it later on the primered set I posted earlier. It's actually quite interesting.

    Collar -

The collar was actually still undersized in proportion to the armor. SO this obviously had to be changed. In the process, some of it's "dimension" was actually removed. The real collar is very "flat". And has a much wider neck opening.

The dents are all different now. Same placements, but more realistic
dents. Most notably is the large dent illustrated in the next pic ....

    Cod Plate -

Where to begin here? I won't even try. This one was actually a revamp of the existing mold. I should have re-sculpted , because it turned to be a bear of a job. The most notable change here, is that it has an added geometry to it. The V.2 cod piece was very round and sleek, with no real geometry to it. As you can see in the pics, there are "angles" around the edges, very similar to the Jango codpiece ! Years of seeing the cod piece through a camera lens, and plexi glass, this little detail slipped right passed us. Well, me anyway. I'm sure there will be some of you that won't confess that you hadn't noticed it either What I do know is, if it had been noticed before, someone, somewhere would have incorporated it. Because it's just, well, COOL ! I know I would have stepped up tot he plate a lot sooner

Aside of the new "lines" planted on this one, the dents are completely different, and the captain's bars (as I like to call them) are much more defined, and "canted" or "cocked" slightly to the left as the screen piece.

Kidney Armor / Butt Plate -

This one is short and sweet. V.1 and V.2 were flat pieces of templated styrene. As most armorers provided for years. It's now vacuum fomed, with dimension. The kidney plate is 27 inches long. Between this noted length, and the cod plate that attaches to the kidney plate, there's approx. 38 to 42 inches of room for you at MOST, depending on how you trim it. This is with a 2 inch overlap on each side for attachment. So it should accommodate most average sized Fetts. If you need more room than this, please specify, and I will include an extension.

    Knees -

To be perfectly clear, as I'm still being asked about the need for a heatgun The knees are not only formed in one piece, they are formed already bent/curved, just as they are in the pics.. This is why the mold was so difficult to make, because releasing the formed plastic from the mold had to be considered, given they are formed in the exact shape you see in the pictures. NO heatgun to form anything, no assembly. Just trim, and mount your darts and strap system. They are extremely flexible. You can add additional support to them from he inside if you prefer, but they should last a long time, as there are no glued seams to crack or break.

What's been changed since V.1? Everything. They are a completely new sculpt. They are larger than the previous version, both width and a little in height. The dart housings are longer, and now have that accurate "wrap" that wraps around toward the back of the leg. And MOST notably ... there is a compound "bevel" at the bottom of the front of the knee. It's there. In every picture of Fett. It's easy to miss with them being painted and mucked up. I've known they were there for a long time. I was just too lazy to incorporate it. I figured now was the time !

    Backplate -

New sculpt. Again, would have been way to difficult to modify. The V.1/V.2 backplate, had too much dimension. Too "stylized" and sleek, for lack of a better term. The real backplate is really pretty plain But it still looks good I think

Most notable ... the "mouth" or "opening" is MUCH wider. The dents are different, and new beveled lips were added to the bottom. The lat wings are bigger. And ther eis now a bevel around each of the jet pack strap opening's, to strengthen the styrene after triming to prevent cracking.

    That's a WRAP !!!

In the first post above, I posted a new picture, that shows the kit in it's entirety. As the old time "Kenner" commercials said ...

"It comes with everything you see here. Some assembly required"

Any questions ... now's the time. Post away. I'm waiting on the price of the plastic to give the price quote. It appears that this tun won't be much more than the last, because I have had a shipment of plastic laying in my shop since the FPH project took me away in JUNE !!! So it will go for nearly the old prices. Keep in mind however, that with the extra pieces, it will be a little more anyway. The next run, will definitely be a bit of a bump. Probably around $50 - $60 more the next time around.

Thanks everyone, for your kind words as always, and for you're continued interest and enthusiasm in 'Ol FP's work !

Good Lord, I spewed a little coffee out my nose on that one Thanks for the pick-me-up

Ok so I'll know for sure about noon today. But it looks like the preliminary price at this point with the basics, and all the extra new parts is going to be $250 + S/H in the lower 48. The old price was $235 + S/H. So it's not too bad. That price should be good for quite a while even with inflation. I can pretty much commit to that. Keep in mind that I haven't raised the price since, oh about 2004, even with all of the hikes in plastic costs. I took a little for the team in recent runs. And even then, it only went up $10 bucks from when they were first introduced. Unfortunately this is because the thickness of the plastic that is used for strength and quality. .060 gauge is what is normally used by makers that do this sort of thing, because it's CHEAP. I refuse to use .060 gauge for ANYTHING. Even though it's probably more accurate to what was used for the movie suit

The V.3 armor is pulled in .090 gauge, and the backplates are 1/8th thick (thicker than the .090) for additional strength. These two thicknesses KILL on the market.

So hang tight until noonish PST today for the confirmation. At that time I will start with the normal 10 slots. I know of a few that are poised over the pay-pal button, so it might fill up fast. If there is more than 10, we'll work it out. I'll probably have to order more plastic, but it's very doable in the same timeframe.

    Thanks everyone !

I won't be needing the knees in my kit. I have a pair of the MOW rubbers.

I'm going on the assumption that the price is for the full set. So my question is will you be offering individual parts after these runs?

    Yep, +1

And... Can you sell for me the butt piece only with the knees? Please I lost it in a moving. The V.2 Cod goes OK with the V.3 Butt?

    Thank you very much.

that works for me. my knees are starting to fall apart again, and i can't seem to bring myself to spend the $$ on the rubber ones.

and it's easier for FP to not have to sort out partial kits. so, when you get your set of armor, let me know what you want for the knees

    Hmm... that's something I didn't think about.

Fettpride, do we need to add the dents to the V3 Kneepads as we have had to do in the past with V1 and V2?

I really hope that is also covered by the MAN himself... would be a same to mess the knee trying to archive a perfect shape... (I'm not good doing those things)...

Any info on this FP ?

Re: FP Armor - Version 3

    Hey Everyone,

Sorry for the delay The price is indeed locked at $250 + S/H.

I'm about ready to post the "serious" list. If my calculations are right, we blew out the first 10

It's ok though. Got it covered. The list will be on the first post, right underneath the pretty picture, with other pertinent info

    Answers to questions ...

    Knees. Butt Plate. Parting out

The short answer is, sure, not a problem. The only caveat is that I want to make sure to have enough plastic for complete sets. So if those that want just parts can wait until it's clearer as to what additional i need to order, I can cover it. I can post a partial "Parting out list".

Dents. As of this VERY MOMENT .... they are DENTLESS. Spideyfett and I talked about this the other day as a matter of fact. And it was pretty much agreed, that I should provide them as a blank palette again because of the various mix and match versions. And I wasn't looking forward to making a second vac mold for the knees "AT THE MOMENT" to have more than one version. But I'm not opposed to it, if we can come to an agreement. I really do want to please.

Now, what I mean is, it's not too late for this to go down - with dents. It will take me a half hour to implement the dents into the existing vac mold. So no big deal there. It will take me about 4 hours to duplicate the existing vac mold for a second version. However, we need to come up with a "standard". What is the most popular, what is preferred. If it's as simple as ESB / ROTJ screen accurate, I'll do it for you. If we're talking getting crazy and wanting exhibit mismatches, or pre-pro's ... no can do. Right now.

So if we can keep this simple stupid (ESB / ROTJ) ... you got me. If someone could post a couple of good screen shots of each version real quick, I'd appreciate it. Because I don't have time to be going through ref CD's and DVD's at the moment.

    So say we all ?

I would say ESB screen accurate knee dents, but then again that is the look I am going for with my BF.

I like the knees as a blank palette. Call me crazy, but I think it would be nice to have all the armor pieces that way so that people can add their own dents or not at all for some prepro parts. Now natually I know you problably dont have the room for all those molds, so here's a thought; What about making an insert that you can pop right in to the dents and any tiny seem would be invisible through the .090 plastic.
That way you can pop them in and out as people request.

I actually considered this man The problem now, is there is really no definitive line on the dents anymore. There is a VERY important "Feathering" effect on them now. And that "feathering" out is different from version to version, especially on the armor. But it is a great idea !
