Boba Helmet 3D Model & Print WIP

Ah! thanks guys. I didn't even realise there was a gallery lol.. I view the forum through Tapatalk so just the forum shows up. Been using Google images for my reference and personally like the FPH2 the most out of all. But I don't want to copy, I want it to be my own but accurate as possible if you get me.

Anyway, I'll have no Internet since I'm moving house this coming week so I've got plenty of time to sculpt!

Thanks again

Agreed.....Unless you're wanting a 3d printed copy of the fph2, you need to use gallery reference photos.

Yeah, I was obviously smoking guano cheeroots; we get so obsessed over copies and copies of copies that it's easy to forget that there's only one standard to aspire to.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question but.. Using a sculpt as a reference pic, which is meant to be pretty damn accurate from what I've seen surely isn't a bad thing?

I mean, It's like Replicating the Anovos Kylo ren helmet using a black series helmet (Which a lot of people achieve through a few mods, and I know for one Anovos isn't 100% screen accurate, especially since propshop popped up.. briefly ..

If something is already so accurate and your using it as reference, how far do you go to make it NOT like said reference photos yet screen accurate if the sculpt is already so accurate..

From all the side by side shots of sculpts (not just FPH2) they match right up with the screen bucket :/..

This is my first model after all. I'm using any and all shots that work for me I can get my hands on

So just for the record, I am going off multiple bucket reference shots to get a good general sculpt. FPH2's shots seem to be helping the best with the cheeks and mandibles, the shape on whole was down to the MSH I showed at first. Now it's just tweaking.

I'll stop rambling now, haha.

Cheers guys.

I don't think the FPH2 is particularly accurate at all so on that basis I think your argument is flawed. You're making an assumption about the FPH2 and its accuracy and it isn't one I agree with based on what I've seen.

I do agree it's your model and you should do what works for you but I also think that if you are basing your model on a flawed fan sculpt (or whatever on earth the FPH2 is) then you're going to struggle to escape the limitations of said piece. All the helmets available to us have limitations of one sort or another and that includes the helmets with known lineage like the MR, GMH, CTM, MF etc. Regardless of my opinion of the FPH2, or any other helmet, I can't see how it would be preferable to use it as a reference when there are so many photos of the real helmets in the gallery. That doesn't make sense. If I was aiming to complete the best paint up replication of a helmet I wouldn't look at pictures of a fan painted helmet I'd look at pictures of the real thing otherwise I'd be trying to match someone elses attempt to match; any mistakes they'd made would bleed into my attempt at that's accepting that there are some fine painters out there.

I wasn't arguing, just curious to what you saw was wrong with me using other sculpts as reference. Especially if I prefer a certain few.. But I totally see your point and agree, I will use the Originals as the main reference for sure.

Anyhow, I don't know the pro and cons of each boba bucket like I do with Kylo's.. I'm sure I will in time.

This is my first 3D sculpt. And first boba sculpt of any kind for that matter So this is a steep learning curve for me to get around haha.

Moving house tomorrow so progress has stopped temporarily. Plus my Kylo soft parts are due to arrive soon so I've still got to Finish my saber hilt and airbrush it to start the process of approval. But I will be back soon!

Cheers!

I wasn't arguing either. You quoted me with a question and I answered. I think this is a fascinating project and I'm enjoying your thread; I know nothing of this technology so it's interesting to see it working through. My observations on the gallery stand. Surely it's the preferred reference.

Good luck with the move. I never enjoy it.

This looks pretty accurate to me.

I can't see how that proves anything. I've seen similar line up shots done with the GMH and The MR recasts and they're quite different in overall shape to the FPH2 and they looked convincing too. I recall Lou doing a similar thing with his DVH MR helmet during a recent flare discussion by matching his helmet to some shots and they looked reasonable but I still wasn't on board with his assertions about flare. It seems to me that if you had anything in reasonable Fett helmet shape country you could make something like this work.

I agree with Andy here. When I did the RWH (Rafal Works Helmet) templates (well, most of my templates and 3D models) I used mainly the GMH and the MR helmets along with images from the exhibits. Nothing beats the originals! If you copy the work of others which has minor flaws, you might aggravate those flaws or do more. Here are some awesome shots of the MF (Malone Fett - direct cast from the Pre-Pro #2 helmet) and the MR (Master Replicas - 3D scanned from the Pre-Pro #3 helmet) ==> http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/pp2-casting-vs-mf-you-judge-22952/ or ==> http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/mr-prototype-helmet-pic-intensive-24030/, and the GMH (Grant McCune Helmet - possibly a later cast from the MF helmet) ==> http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/grant-mccune-boba-fett-helmet-50902/. Wasteland, the FPH was made to try and Look like the ESB helmet with all the specific oddities being added by hand. In that respect alone it succeeds in looking like the ESB in photo comparisons. (Which were done by FP and therefore possibly photoshopped to make them compare closer anyway)
Comparisons like that can lie, measurements and side by side pictures of the helmets sitting right next to each other do not. I can confirm there is quite a lot of detail, geometry, and size about the FPH2 that is not correct.
Not sure why you get so defensive of it?
Every casting out there has its limitations. Intwenothor I would say is one of the most knowledgeable and honest about these limitations because he, like me, does not make the quest for the best into a personal dick measuring contest. ;)

Defensive, how? All I'm saying is there isn't an ESB hero cast out there available to buy and unless you had access to the efx mold, you're stuck with second or third best. The fph2 looks good to me and that's all that matters. There are other reasons why I don't like other helmets out there. I have a big head so the gmh looks small on me. The dvh didn't lool that great of a cast when I saw it. No other PP2 helmets were available. So it left me with litttle available options. What's up with the dick measuring contest? No where did I say that the fph2 is superior. All I said was that it looks pretty accurate. Not identical.

What stories? Did Art, Gino et al sell their MFs for FPH2s?

Nah they sold there copies because there was something better obviously.

oh I agree with copying the originals if you're going to copy something. I was simply stating that I don't think the Fett pride helemt is such a pos that Andy thinks it is.

Well, I can certainly agree we will all strive to best that is available to us at any one time. That might also explain why I've owned 7 distinct and different castings since this all started. Other than the original MF the only one that has truly interested me that I've not managed to see, and that I know definitely exists, is the BM; at this point it's more curiosity with regard to the BM than anything else.

In respect of Art, Gino et al selling their MFs because there was something better; that might be the case or it might not. I've not seen evidence of anything other than them being sold.

Edit: pos?

...and another FP discussion ends in a fistfight!

Seriously though my 2cents. There are 2 forces at work here (as I see it). 1st is looking screen accurate and the 2nd is being screen accurate. I think this is where the disagreements come in (not in all cases).

With the research I've been doing for a new sculpt I'm working on... I'm coming to believe the flare is actually somewhere between MR (no flare) and FPH2 (lots of flare). Even if the FPH2 turns out to not be the last word in ESB it still looks great in person. (Wastelands castings are great too) The number of people wanting one is a testament to that.
