I just got up after the night shift here in Reykjavík Iceland. As some know I´m a police officer like so many here.
Last night started out like any other, drunk guy beating his wife, what a weasle.
I managed to grap something to eat and aroun 3:30 I got a F-1 call from distpatch (f-1 is Code 3 life is in dagner get ther as fast as you can) there was a report of a huge fire downtown, where buildings are build tight and mostly made of timber and built around the begining of the last century.
When I got down town I saw one of the biggest fires I have ever seen in an appartment building. No one knew how many lived there and if anyone was inside. Lucky no one died.
I saw a movement in the basement, wich housed an appartment, there was a couple trying to get out, I had to shout at them and drag them out. Note the whole building was on fire, and the reason the basement was not on fire was because it was concrete. Glass was flying all over the place, Firedepartment had not arraived.
I managed to drag them out, but at the last minute the female rips loose from my grip and dives deeper inside the appartment. H runs out and I follow her. I find here in side looking for valuables then the lights fuse out total darkenss.
I´ve never been so thankful for my Surefire flashlight, I just thought need to get out I´ve got a blazing inferno above me.
We managed to get out. What a night. Two firefigters were almost burned to death inside the building and they jumpt out a window and on a balcony, the balcony was a bonus, they were gona leap out and take the chance.
A friend of mine (PO) raises a ladder to the balcony wich is 6 to 8 meters from the ground. But the flames are getting to them so one FIrefighter uses the ladder but falls from the top on to my friend, but the other scaled down a plole.
you can see the press coverage here http://mbl.is/mm/frettir/innlent/2009/01/16/grunur_um_ikveikju/
It is Icelandic, you can see me at the very end, I got my back turned to the camera.
Here is another clip from a news, you can see the fireman with a propane tank climbing down the ladder if the camera would have not panned you would have seen him fall down.
