MinuteFett Helmet Sculpt

Hey everyone,

So im currently in progress of my sculpt and am trying to find out if the overall shape of the helmet looks good to you guys before I move on to smoothening and achieving the wavy brow/physical damage. The helmet base is from the Master Replica helmet. I molded the helmet then made a gelcoat fiberglass cast and lay monster clay over it to make it a bit bigger since its already a small helmet. I removed the dent to reposition it and work on it off the helmet, along with the rear keyslots to sharpen them a bit more.

I've been working on achieving the symmetry by laying pictures of my sculpt over pictures of the efx model and trying to add clay wherever necessary to achieve a similar shape. I'm using the following two pictures, but I feel that I'm constantly adding/removing clay because I can't seem to take a picture with the same angles. To me, it looks good, but I'm trying to obtain the most accuracy I can. From the two reference pictures, it seems to me that I have the shape almost perfect, but as I said before, when I use other pictures my sculpt seems off.

QUESTION:
Can anyone comment and tell me if the shape of the helmet is good? Or if there's any places where it looks off?
Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks guys.

I think the overall shape and size of the MR is about right so I'm unsure what the overall goal is; is it accuracy or is it a bigger helmet? The MR is already one of the bigger helmets out there although it's much smaller than the FPH that Shenphong currently has. The overall shape looks okay so far as I can see from the pictures but it's impossible for me to tell if you have uniformity of depth over the helmet. Only you can know that. Doing it this way you'll simply have to eyeball it.

I'd rework the dent by adding a bit of definition to the circumference and then adding some definition to the ridges and undulations within the dent itself. It has always been one of the weak points of the MR derived helmets in my opinion.

The brow sag is tricky. I spent ages trying to replicate this myself and not convinced I nailed it. The effort on the FPH2 ESB wasn't a bad attempt.

You've cleared that up nicely. I assumed it was a bit on the smaller side but that may be due to the padding on the inside of my MR that made the helmet a big snug. I added clay all around the helmet as I had read in previous threads that there were some shape issues with the MR, but I may just shave some of it down to bring it back to its original shape.
I have since smoothened it and have fixed any depth issues all around, up next is the dent, then keyslots, then the mandibles.

I'll work on this and update the thread with pics when I can.

Thanks Andy!

The padding on the MR is pretty generous but once you strip that out it should be fairly roomy. What's it like inside your recast, that should give you a better idea. The smallest helmet I think i had was a gmh. Those are small.

Just took a look at it and it is pretty roomy in there. Looks like ill be scraping off a lot of the clay to get it back to the original shape.
Back to the drawing board!

Update: Heres some pics of this current helmet.

Nearing completion of this helmet but still have a lot of clean up to do. Clay is forgiving but a lot harder to get smoother details I think.

I think I have some good placement with the dent and almost there with the mandibles. Up next are ill be working on cleaning everything up adding the physical damage.

What do you guys think? Comments? Suggestions?

That is an impressive looking sculpt... I've done a lot of work with monster clay and I've always found that when you're nearing completion, you have to keep your sculpting sessions short. Pliability is great in the beginning, not so much towards the end. Also, I'm not sure what kinds of tools you're working with, but for final smoothing (especially when any kind of detail is involved), I use a variety of pallette knives.

Oh wow that’s a nice tool set right there. I’ve been using small tools for the most part and it’s been a real hassle with working with big areas. Ima head to hobby lobby and see if I can pick some of those up.

Thanks Greg, I wanted it to stand out from the other helmets and figured this would be a nice touch (: . I hope to have my helmet available within a couple weeks!

Are you taking it right back to the original MR shape?

Can we see the dent please?

I think the production helmets all seem to exhibit a narrowing of the orbital band over the right temple. I couldn't say for the Sandy or Eyes helmet so much as the reference is limited but the ESB, PP3, Jedi, and PP2 all apear to have this feature. I think this is one the areas that's cleaned up on the MR for the sake of uniformity. That needs to go in.

Did you rework the keyslots completely with your own MQ1?

Heres a pic of the dent, I think its pretty close compared to the EFX model in the last picture.
