Ok so today i did some more work on this..
I did the detail "slats" Again, printed through photoshop at 63%. Mounted them on posterboard. In the reference pic, the bottom "slats" seemed to have a slight inward "bow" to them, so i altered the template accordingly.

Then assembled them with hot glue.

I then did the second layer "slat/box". I had to position them a bit lower than they would normally sit, to get them to the proper height from the bottom, going by the reference pics. Here they are both attached with hotglue. I also added a coffee can to the top, turns out it was only a hair narrowere than needed, which worked perfect since i was going to bondo over it.

Added the center strip, done the same way, with posterboard, and hot glue.

I then went in and extended the depth of the bottom to match the photos, and my MOW pack. I went a little overboard on the inset panel, so that will be fixed, but the basic shapes are there now.

I then started to bondo the pack. Obviously it needs to be sanded and then re-bondo'd and fine tuned etc...but this is where im at now:
