I do mine similar to what IceMonkey said.

1 Krylon flat black primer.
2 sublte silver dry brushing
3. subtle dabbing of burnt sienna acrylic to give it slight rust tones

thats how i do the ESB one, but sounds to me like the look your going for may work with this technique.
