The reason shapeways is so expensive is because they use a different kind of 3d printer than what most people are used to seeing these days. They use SLA printing which uses a light source to harden each layer leaving no visible print layers. The resin required for this kind of printing is also very expensive, hence why the jetpack body is over 1000 dollars. You could build a big enough FDM printer that could print the entire body for less than a 1000. Vulcanus MAX - CoreXY Aluminum Frame 3D Printer Scale UP. Which is actually how I plan to build mine.
