I know I'm late but why use only one tip and not both? wall putty seems to work better on the cheeks so use it there while you have some fiberglass/resin on the other areas. hope it helps

Use wood filler, its like a thick paste that dries quickly. it also has no smell and is only about $5 for a pretty good amount. It comes out strong, but easy to sand.
