I have built my own vacuformer, and it can be done on the cheap. After all the work, effort and money, I recommend paying the $125 for the Proto-Form plans and pay a fabricator to weld up all the parts. I the thinking has been done for you.

A good armature is the foundndation to start with, and cutting a few templates wouldn't hurt. If you cut a few outline templates of the helmet, you can use them to test if one side has the same shape as the other.

Bondo in a tube? Are you looking for Glazing Putty in a tube? Bondo has their own brand of the stuff and you find it whereever Bondo products are sold. Try Walmart. BTW, it is just lacquer with filler.

water clay will work fine for what you are doing. It is quick to shape and toughens up as is drys. You can vacuform over it wet and use the pull as a mold into which, stone is poured. Sand the stone plug smooth and you have your hard tool for more vacuforming. Hope that helps.
