It has been a few years, and my copy of DUNE was on VHS, and I no longer have a VCR, so I went looking for it on DVD.
I found it in a newer collectors edition. The extended version is an hour longer! The intro at the beginning is awesome. It goes much deeper into the history and backgrounds.
This movie hold up quite well. I loved it then, and I love it now. It's darker than Star Wars. Almost like Marylin Manson meets Tim Burton, meets Star Wars, and allows Gieger (creator of ALIEN) to build some of the sets!
It also has behind the scenes, model making, and costume design. They even discuss how they made the Stillsuits. I would love to make one of these. I wonder if Muad'Dib has one!
They also used forced perspective since there were no computers. One shot they made a small model of a ship with 100 soldiers all 1 inch tall standing in front of it. They put the model right in front of the camera and lined up the ramp to the ship with a hole in the model. Then they built the ramp full size a few hundred feet away and had the actors run down it, and because they were so far away they were the same size as the 1 inch model soldiers. RAD!!!
If any of you guys have not seen Dune, I highly recommend it.
