Jango Fett Build

I still have trimming to do, as well as securing the two sides in the back. And then the final stage....coloring. Jango's girth belt is a mixture of dark brown, a bit of "orange", with a reddish tint correct? Sort of....I'm trying to think of a kind of wood it looks like. Anyway, I've been looking at Cruzer's belt. Crazy stuff right there. I'll try to use his colors as a good reference.

Reading the first post I didn't think that sounded like it would work. However after seeing the pictures you might be able to pull that off. I will be interested to see how the paint and colors go on the products for the end result.

No it doesn't look to tall. Jango's girth belt is fairly substantial.

My first blaster came today. I have done some touch up sanding, etc. My other one should arrive shortly. They are a resin 1:1 scale kit. 4 Pieces. After the sanding and just overall "cleaning them up", they look pretty good. I got them from an ebay seller "coolmodels". Decent price, including shipping they were $42 each. I'm using some drilled holes with pieces of wire along with the glue to hold them together better. I'll show a pic of that.

I used a generic walmart chrome paint that came out very chrome looking...almost mirror like. For the handle I used a pewter colored model paint from a hobby shop and the gold... you can get a really nice 24 carat gold paint at Michaels Craft store.

Well...I need to go paint shopping. Need to get some of that "chrome" paint. I have put 1 pistol together and need to clean up and put together the other one. There are some resin pieces that need to get sanded off. They are longer and thinner than a plastic Jango blaster.

It's been a little while since I posted some stuff. Well...I had to make a new girth belt. Gorilla glue is terrible for this kind of thing. In this business I have learned that you reach success through trial and error. Case and point. ;-) SO! I have now got an insane girth belt that is drying from the stain right now! See pics. Hot glue is amazing by the way. Absolutely amazing. I may need to go back with some more stain because it's drying a bit lighter than I wanted.
Materials:
Once again using the leather-like cupboard liner.
1/4 inch Nylon rope. 100 feet is recommended.
Super de duper tape. Spiced up duct tape. Not the brand name.
Cherry Wood stain.
And last but not least...multiple sticks of hot glue! And a hot glue gun.

My armor came in a few days ago and I have been trimming, forming, reshaping, painting, re-painting, and painting some more. It's starting to look really cool. I got the kit from schubiwon on ebay. Sturdy stuff. Good deal on it. But requires a decent amount of trimming and reshaping. And you'll have to get different knee armor. And foot armor. I made mine. I'll show pics of armor later. Thanks guys.

Basically the 1st girth belt ended up way too stiff and some glue was showing on the front from leaking through. :-(

Both pistols are put together and I'm working on painting those. Waiting for some stuff to dry on the cod piece and the shin pieces. Then I have to sand them and get the shape all squared away.

Is this helmet too big???? I almost feel like a bobble-head. I'm 6-1 and 180 lbs with decently wide shoulders. It looks/feels to big for me.

Do you have your chest armor yet? If so, put it on an then let's get some photo's. The armor will make you look bigger.

Also, how much room do you have in the helmet? Can you spin it around your head with no problem? If so, it might be to big. Again, it will depend on how you look with the armor on.

Here's the unfinished vest and armor. The armor has to be trimmed down a bit. Yeah I can spin my head around inside the helmet. And it even has padding in it.
It doesn't look as big with the armor on, but the armor will be smaller once I trim it...yeah. I don't know. It's hard for me to tell.

It's early in the morning, so I could be way off but.....were the photos taken in a mirror? If not, what side of the helmet is your range finder on? Looks great so far. Can't wait to see the finished girth belt! By the way, off the subject: ever been told you look like Sylar from HEROES???

Hey, yeah the images automatically get mirrored with the camera on my computer. Sorry. Sylar..haha. Thanks. People think my bro and I look like people from tv shows. This one kid was convinced my brother was Boone from LOST. Good times. Yeah the girth belt is pretty much done. I may need to do just a bit of color modification, and then get it all attached in the back.

So is the helmet too big?

So what I'm wondering is...you want to really love your helmet right? It should fit great and all that and you should be comfortable in it. I feel like it's way to big. And I'm thinking that other helmets (like asok's) aren't as "big"? So should I try and sell this helmet to someone who's bigger than me and get an asok kit? Hmmm...

It's a really good helmet though. Dark visor, fiberglass, helmet padding and strap, I mean it's nice. I just feel like it's too big on me. Help anyone?

I have the Asok lid and it's almost too small for me, and I dont even have a big head. The tip of my nose just rubs on the inside of the visor apart from that it fits me fine.

I'll admit that helmet does look a little too large on you, also at first glance your armour looks a little bit large aswell.

Yeah, the armor still has to be trimmed down. That's why it looks big...because it is. ;-)

Update:
Trimmed, painted, and weathered armor pieces. Still need o do the backplate. Ran out of sealing spray. ;-)
Boots are totally done and weathered.
Girth and Ammo belts are totally done.
*The ammo belt had square front flaps and was a dark brown leather. Trimmed and worked them to get a better color/weathering. I think they looks great.
Blasters just need a bit more gold and different handle color. Then they need to be sealed.
I'm thinking I won't need to do Rub n Buff on the armor, but I'm not sure yet. We'll have to see. Hopefully I didn't weather the armor too much. I don't think I did anyway.
My stuff from evolution props came! Jumpsuit, vest, and knee armor. The knee armor got a bit dinged up in shipping but I fixed them up no problemo. The vest is great and the jumpsuit color is just about perfect! Amazing match. I recommend the jumpsuit highly for sure! Fits great.

I'll post some pics here in a bit.

Here's the girth belt, ammo belt, and holsters all rigged up. BTW, the cod piece is coming in from Cruzer here shortly. Forgot to mention, the cod piece has to be replaced from shubiwon too. Tis ok though!

Moving along well.

2 things that I notice in the pics. Your boot armor looks to be a bit forward, giving a bit of a duck foot look.
Your ammo belt looks large in comparison to the girth. You might need a wider girth to try and balance the ammo belt.

Could be the angle or the pocket folding. There's girth on either side of the ammo pouches. The boots, yeah, I can see that. We'll see what they look like with jumpsuit and shins. Thanks for the comments.

Armor on vest pics:
The spacing is adjustable btw. The collar space needs to get fixed I realize now. Maybe others too. How's the coloring and weathering?

your spacing is a bit tight......you may need to cut them down a bit.

Jango has some space showing between his plates. I had a nice set of wickedbeard armor that I eventully sold because it was just too big, and I didn't want to cut it.

Yeah...none of my stuff is completely finalized. I might have to trim my armor down just a tad...or just get my spacing configured properly. Either or..or both. ;-) I still need to get my leg armor velcroed to my suit, and get the shoulders all figured out. And then the back plate.....

Looks good! A few things:

1. The armor should be trimmed more, almost an inch all around the chest pieces. The edges of the armor ( collar, chest and ab) should all match up. Once you cut the chest to size up to the collar you will than need to trim the ab plate. The shapes are really good, just too big.

2. I would suggest the pouches be smaller. You want to be able to see roughly 1.5 inches of girth belt above and below the pouches

3. I would pull the thigh armor up by about 3 inches and making longer armor pieces for the thighs. They just seem too small. Also try rounding out the upper lower curves. They look like they have some corners to them. They should be gently curves

4. The colors look really good! Seriously...really nice job nailing the coloring and weathering. The knees look really nice...are they hand made?

Yeah..I have some size adjusting to do. The knees were done by Evolution Props. Good ones. All the leg armor is not attached yet, I still need to do all the velcroing, so the positioning in the photos are for sure not final. Haha it was hard trying to keep it hanging there. Glad the colors came out good. Really appreciate the constructive criticism. Tis a part of the process.

SO.....my jumpsuit is too big. I need to figure that out.
ALSO....my thigh plates are too small. I can make them myself I think. "Trash Can" armor? Anyone have any advice or ideas? I'm kind of in a tight spot.
SO...should I just grab a trash can from walmart or something and use a template to cut them out?

There are good templates for ya. Also did you cut the chest armor? If not you can use the template to give you an idea of how much to cut.

You can use a trash can or a plastic tote. Just trace and cut and than sand the edges smooth. Go back and Rub N' Buff the armor. You might want to RNB the whole suit if the silvers doint match up.

Yes Hobby Lobby will have R+B.

You can also make your thighs out of PVC pipe. Get a section of 6 inch PVC pipe and cut the thighs out of it. It will be MUCH sturdier than the plastic tote or trashcan. It is a little more difficult to work but the end result will be light years better. I have used the PVC pipe on several things and I like working with it. Plus you may be able to get it as scrap at a construction sight. I like to use the white.

I know I have seen thighs on the forum made from the PVC pipe. If I remember right Solo's Open Season Jango used this method. Do a search for when he sold it and I think there were pictures of both sides and where he bolted the holsters to them.

Just to add....I would get the cod in place before going to far on the thighs. It may make a big visual difference.

Solo's PVC armor is the BOMB! It does take some patience working with it, but if you get it right, as Solo obviously did, you would swear you are actually wearing bullet-proof armor. I started to build with some of it but just didn't have the tools, experience or know-how; but DANG is it sturdy!!!

Asok Helmet kit arrived!!! WOW! It is absolutely amazing. Beautiful. Insane shape and details. I've got all the parts. Now comes the fun part.....Finishing it. That will be a ton of work. I'll post progress pics. Here is the kit just out of the box. ;-) Thanx Asok! It's amazing.

So I have trimmed the excess off the helmet bottom and cut out the t-visor. Wow. It was pretty intense. Thank God for Dremel tools. I started sanding just a bit and I love seeing the metallic finish come through!!! Didn't have any problems or mishaps so I'm stoked about that. Lot of work ahead of me though. Need to buy some more sandpaper....

Could someone give me some detailed tips/instructions on getting the keyslots all set and installing them? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mhlayne - I would like to offer a small suggestion, based on my own recent FIRST TIME experiences with a helmet: Don't cut the key slots out yet; wait until all of your sanding and polishing is complete. In fact, if there is a way for you to hot glue the visor piece that you cut out back in, it would offer some more stability while you're sanding, which equals less chance of small hairline cracks due to torquing of the cheeks while you're sanding. I was so excited to cut things out so it looked more like a Fett helmet that I had (and still am) to deal with some small hairline cracks. Other than that it looks great. When the time comes to install the key slots here is what I did (which is by no means THE best way; it just worked for me):

1. Be sure to polish the key slots the same as you do the helmet
2. Cut out the opening on the helmet
3. Place the keyslots inside the helmet and trace the cut out area of the helmet onto the key slots (did that make sense?)
4. Use your dremmel to cut the traced lines, leaving just a tad-bit of excess
5. Hand file, try to install, hand file, try to install, hand file, try to....you get the idea.
6. Once it is installed, glue, epoxy, whatever you choose to keep it in place. Hot glue the mesh in place.
7. Weather the seams to hide any unsavory work

I'm pretty sure there are different, better, easier, etc. methods, but this is one. Good luck!

Oh yes....I forgot. If you can, pick up a Mouse Sander (electric palm sander) from Home Depot. It'll save you time and tendonitis trying to get rid of that seam on the helmet. It's not a necessity, but definitely easier!

Again, this is something I found out AFTER I completed my helmet! LOL!!

Its not as much work as you may think. Look up Saint_Nasty's tutorials and follow them. You can't go wrong. The main thing is to not get into too much of a hurry. Sand the CC down to the right layer and you will have a very nice helmet.

Does the size look better than the previous one? I am guessing it does.

The keyslots gave me trouble on my first helmet but once I got going they aren't that bad.

Yes the sizing is MUCH better! Yeah, I've been looking at his posts and will take my time. If I can stand it.

SO I have completed stage 1 of sanding. Getting everything smooth and all excess bumps/dips/all that stuff off. I have not gone over with really fine sand paper yet. I'm going to go back over and just make sure I've got everything situated first.
*Question* about the ear piece. Do I have the placement right? Hopefully the pics are good enough to show what I'm talking about. It's not attached or anything so, no worries. ;-) Thanks

Yes the ear sits all the way down on top of the lower section. Look in the gallery and you can confirm how it sits. I think one of the threads in the Jango forum shows how to attach the ear with some small bolts/nuts. I haven't looked for that thread in a long time but that is how I attach mine. Of course I wait to attach the ears till all of the painting is done.

Keep going on the seam across the top and the little seam area just behind the ear. They will go away I promise. What grit sand paper are you down to?

Yeah those seams...I tell you what..haha. Going to go back over those. I used medium 120 to get the more heavy duty stuff off and then a higher number (medium still, not sure which number, it was a block we had lying around) which was a bit finer and left a smoother finish. But yeah there are just a few problem areas I need to still get. Then I'll go into really fine sanding and get her all set to paint. Oh and the key slots. What tool do you recommend to cut the little pieces out? Kinda tricky I think. Do you have to take them out in order to be totally accurate? What do you think? Has anyone not taken them out? Thanks

I trimmed my boot armor back. Looks way better, not funky anymore.
I'm returning my jumpsuit and am getting one custom tailored to fit better. ;-)

Helmet's coming along well. No problems so far. I am being super careful.

You can use hobby files on the keyslots. Just slowly file them all out.

Yeah I used an xacto knife and followed up with hobby files.

I would go after those seams with no more than 200, 120 is pretty rough. I usually started at 200 then 320, 400, 800 and even went to 1000. By the time I hit the 320-400 range I am wet sanding in the sink though. If you haven't tried wet sanding then I suggest it. It makes a world of difference

Sweet! I will definitely try wet sanding. I was wondering, how much rub n buff would I need to do all my armor pieces? And the blasters too? It comes in the 1/2 ounce tubes at hobbylobby. And I'd use silver leaf correct?

I don't know about others, since I could be doing my armor incorrectly, but 1/2oz of the Rub-n-Buff seems like it could do about 3 full sets of armor. A little bit of that stuff goes a loooooong way. However, I would wait to see what some of the other more experienced builders chime-in with. You're truckin' along with this thing. Great Job!

Yeah a little goes a long way. When I started working on items I bought 2 tubes and I have done a lot of stuff and just started the second one. The nice thing about the R+B is that its usually easy to find so if you do need more you can pick it up without much searching...........unlike the paint colors. I would just get one tube to start.

I have an almost full tube and a completely unopened tube from doing my jet pack...a little goes a very long way.

SO...I have been doing some research and thinking. My armor pieces are off enough to make me not happy with them for Jango. My leg rmor needed to be redone anyway, and I'd like to have almost all the pieces out of the same material. And how cool would it be to have real metal armor? So I have printed off templates got them all set for tracing. I'm going to check and re-check the sizing of my chest pieces to make sure they are just right. My knees, cod piece, and helmet are all great, no modifications needed. And the backplate was really off, so having an accurate one would be awesome.

I'll probably put up the other pieces for sale. If someone wants some pieces for a custom mando they'ed be perfect. Just not for a Jango. ;-)

Do they? Hmm...those are the medium size templates. I was worried they were too small. Is the ab part and collar fine? Just need 2 smaller chest pieces?

i would not make new chest plates from the small template but simply trace a line around the out edge about 1/4 in from the edge and just cut it. The Small might be too small... The rest look good. My helmet was cold cast so I did not use RnB. But for the Jet Pack I used primer 1st than RnB.

Ok. Took your advice on the chest plates. They should be perfect. These are 26 gauge steel sheets. Not super thick. Shouldn't be too difficult to shape them. Can't wait to get them all cut out.

Well....I got 9 of the 13 pieces cut out. My mom said I had to be done because my sister was going to bed and it was way too loud haha. Sigh...such is life. Anyway, the metal armor is crazy. I still have to do some hammering and tidying up of the edges, but it is awesome! Can't wait till it is all set.

mhlayne...you're doing it right...taking advice and critics in stride and upgrading and learning. Accurate Costuming is difficult enough but tackling a Fett can be really trying. I had two fully finished costumes under my belt and worked on countless others for other people before taking on Jango. I congratulate you for going head full force. Keep those pics Coming!

So, yesterday I did a bunch of wet sanding on my helmet and then finished up with 0000 steel wool in the shower. ;-) Really smooth. I cut out the piece in the back for the keyslot piece. But, am struggling to figure out how to get the keyslots cut out. I have an exacto knife. But don't really see how that can get them out. I'm scared of using our Dremmel. SO...I am in a tight spot. What are hobby files (sandysith)? I rub n buffed my armor. Looks great on the cod piece, but on the metal, it almost comes right off when metal touches metal. So, I may end up taking it off. The color difference is not much. Got all my paints for the helmet and jetpack. Cool. Yeah that's the latest.

The hobby files are just really little files, they ususally come in a pack of 10 or so. I you are scared of the dremel on the key slots you can use a little drill bit on the dremel to poke several holes in the slots and then clean them up with the files. In the absence of the files you can use some sandpaper, say 220/320 or so, and just fold it a couple of times so that it is a bit rigid, then just use it like a file to clean the slots.

The only major benifit of the files is that they don't wear out like the sand paper, and they have a little handle.

So...the helmet is painted. Just one tiny area on one cheek to adjust. Nothing major. Man oh man do I love this helmet! Asok you rock! Now I just have to get the antenna and rangefinder all set, along with the keyslots and then finally pinstriping andthe visor! I love this helmet. I'm going to rub n buff the silver parts of the helmet as well.

You can do with some more sanding on the CC parts. Hit it with some 320 really well. I can tell on the back of the dome that it needs some more sanding, I can still see some of the tell tale signs from the mold.

Oh ok! Whoops. For some reason I was under the impression you did r and b it. Nevermind then. I won't let the r and b touch it. ;-) More sanding, eh? Yeah I'll get on that. Yeah there's one like, hump thing on the dome, I was worried about sanding too much. But then, probably not enough. :-) Thanks for saving me. That's what you're here for!!

What I can see is a little spot on the back that has kinda a 3 leaf clover look. It is right at the back of the dome as it slopes down. If that is still readily visible then you can sand some more for sure. You don't have far to go and I would use probably about a 320 to a 400 to hit it then back off to 800 and then hit it with some metal polish. See what you think about it after that.

I used Krylon shortcuts Ocean Blue. Took me forever to find that! Then a mixture of a couple Valspars to get the other blue. Yuppers. Could not find rustoleum royal blue. Went to about 10 different places. But I think the blues are where they should be. I think. ;-) It's such a nice helmet. Sooo nice. Still have much to do on it.

So! Here are some pics of my vest with the armor attached. With snap fasteners. And I'll add some velcro too. Just have to attach the shoulders. And then the backplate. My MOW jetpack is assembled. Waiting on a harness, then I'll cut the strap slots and then begin painting! Yeah! I love my steel armor.



And my vest is NOT black. It's grey. ;-)
