Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Hello everyone, well this is the start (officially), I first set out and purchased a Bobamaker helmet, the wait time for that was 3 months (due this month, may), so i thought i would keep busy and keep focused on that distant goal line, so while scouring this site for knowledge and deciding the hows and the which's I stumbled upon a thread, cant remember who, but I thought i would try to build my armor as he did out of a garbage bin!

    Check my thread here.... http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f20/a...-thread-44262/

It went quite well but I guess i kinda knew it wasn't up to scratch and would be a little thin looking. Still a good idea, but it was proving a little difficult to make the back plate. It was then I realised this wasn't what I wanted at all, then I stumbled upon the awesome RKD thread, and realised it was a possibility to purchase quality armor at an affordable price. So I have to say, the best choice i have made thus far! I thoroughly recommend RKD, the armor is awesome and Will is an absolute delight to do business with. So as all this beautiful armor is sitting in front of me I had better get started! Please feel free to comment give advice, I really want to get this as accurate as I possibly can! So im going to need a LOT of help! Hahaha!

Thanks mate! How are you going with all the trimming? Im not sure if Will trims it as close as he has on mine? I dont have a great deal of actual cutting just some filing and sanding! Yippiee!

hey hobbit, that is a good turn around time, makes it hard to compete, unless you have heaps of time and great shipping, from what i have have heard RKD is bloody good with his customer satifaction.

Too right mate! I am very new to this and its a big learning curve doing business the way we seem to have to in this fett hunt, I have chased a few here and there some not responding at all, some... I have been warned off completely, by the good people here! It really is amazing how helpful everyone is here! It really boosts the confidence in the face of how daunting this project is.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Wow you guys are all way too kind!! Thanks so much for the great compliments!
Yes, I have been sending quite a bit of armor to you mates down under and it's not a problem at all! And YOU all are an absolute pleasure to deal with as well! Thank you all so much for your continued business and support

You know, if I didn't have a full time job I'd be knocking orders out even faster lol. I really do try to make items ahead of time and have them in stock but I've been so busy that everything's been selling as fast as I can make it (not complaining, that's a good thing!)! Not sure if you all know yet, but I've started making some greeblies for the gaunts and have also hired a machinist to start making me some of those parts as well so that I'll have some nice perfect masters to mold up...so keep your eyes peeled!
And keep those WIP's coming! I always love to see what people are doing with my armor.
    Cheers friends!

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

well you deserve all the good press Will thats for sure!

Just a quick update, I've been busy trimming and sanding and filing, so im hoping to be painting by the weekend! I also went the same way as The Phantom and left a little bit extra on the armour, and not trimming it all the way...... it was approved by Rafa, so that is definitely good enough for me!
I'll be posting some pics soon!
Also my plan is to airbrush all the armour and helmet with humbrol model paints(I have most of them now), as i think it will (hopefully) be as accurate as can be in this country of limited paints! I have to thank Jayvee for inspiring me to go in that direction.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Finally I have some photos to show! Been trying hard to get moving on this as I have the work in front of me to do! Anyway, I have had a few setbacks of late particularly my health, but hopefully that will sort itself out without any surgery... my last year in my 30's better not be an indication of the next decade!!
So enough said in that area, and here are some pics!

    004.jpg005.jpg006.jpg007.jpg008.jpg
All sanded trimmed and display and jetpack holes cut out. My son added smiley face on codpiece!

    009.jpg010.jpg011.jpg013.jpg
Everything but the backplate has been primed and then lightly sanded and is now ready for silver coat. The backplate has been marked for trimming around the neck for better alignment with the neck collar. I will prime and sand after trimming ( its only 1 - 2mm on the inside of the neck.). Please feel free to give any advice or point out any issues as I am learning and really appreciate you awesome people helping me to make a better Fett. More to come.....

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Ok so i have to say I am learning a LOT!! hahaha! So I have rubbed down sprayed silver, gently rubbed down again. The problems I've been having with the cheap primer and silver enamel spray cans, my conspiracy theory is there is dust and hair generously added to each and every can!
With that lesson learned i will be priming and everything else exclusively with the awesomeness that is Humbrol, the best option in Australia thats for sure!

    imgp0620.jpgimgp0621.jpgimgp0618.jpgimgp0619.jpg

Moving on... i started masking (Humbrol Maskol), this stuff dries out in minutes! A bit of a shock to start with, I had to keep putting the lid back on as it was setting at the top of the jar. I applied it with toothpicks and worked off Rafa's awesome templates! Hats off to him his work is truly amazing!
I didn't trace it on to the armour or even draw it on first. I simply copied by eye as Im a fairly good artist and I think I did ok, I hope you guys will let me know if I got anything completely wrong! It is a bit hard to see by the photos at this stage but as the masking comes off, all will be revealed as they say! Thanks for looking!

Well done buddy.. good so far.

Humbrol paints, I take note on that when I start mine. what are you going to use to mask of the sliver, are you going to use a liquid masking liquid and what type.

Another Aussie fett to our legions.

I also have a set of RKD armor to start working on, but I want to start my scratch built jetpack in the next couple of weeks.

    cheers

Hey Pablo! Yeah nice to see some aussies on here! I am using Humbrol Maskol for all my masking, there's a sneaky pic of it in the pics above. It only cost me $10 at the local hobby store and there is no way im going to run out, especially using a toothpick to apply it! I will post the humbrol paints as I go, and I will post all my boo boo's as I go also
Thats great your scratch building your jetpack, you're definitely way more skilled than I Pablo! hahaha! Which Boba are you planning to build? I'll keep an eye on ya threads in the future!

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Well I've been putting in some hours into the masking, I think my eyes are going a bit cross eyed after that last stint!!

This layer was airbrushed with Humbrol Insignia Yellow (154) and managed to cover the armour from the 14ml pot. Its amazing how much you can do with such a small amount!
It is a little thin in spots but I didnt think it mattered as much, because its there where it needs to be. Anyway it's masked ready for the green which I will hopefully be starting tomorrow.

    imgp0634.jpgimgp0635.jpgimgp0636.jpgimgp0637.jpgimgp0638.jpg

Let us know if you can see anything that shouldn't be as many eyes are better than two! Does anyone know how to go about painting your own emblems without out sourcing stencils? Thanks

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Quick update, starting to get worried Im going to make a mess of this! I hope this is normal first time jitters?
So I have done the lighter green (Cockpit Green 78) mostly on the ab plate, collar and cod.
    imag0748.jpgimag0749.jpgimag0750.jpg
Masked again, and sprayed with the final green (US Light Green 117).
    imag0751.jpgimag0752.jpgimag0753.jpg
I got these colours from a LOT of searching for Humbrol and stumbled upon this page, Boba Fett Paint Colors - MindMeister Mind Map which as I understand, is based on information gathered on TDH. So maybe one of the more learned peoples here can confirm or deny this?!

I am a bit unsure of the next step... Do I peel all the making off, or so I start weathering? I know its hard to tell, with lighting and such but what do we think of the colours? Thank you for looking!

Hey Hobbit looking good, I would keep the masking fluid on and then do the weathering.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Hey there fellow fettheads! Well, I've been stressing about this over the last few days and have had some awesome advice from some truly awesome people! So thanks to RKD ,Deadland, the Phantom and Jayvee. Nice to have some of the best have got my back! All I need now is Rafalfett on board and im set!! Ha ha!
Anyway, I've done some misting with Humbrol Matt Black (33), and for the first time I saw it coming together! So later today, I started peeling all the masking off.... I was a bit shocked, maybe because I got used to seeing it in one colour and then BOOM! Here's some pics!
    imgp0640.jpgimgp0639.jpgimgp0641.jpgimgp0642.jpgimgp0643.jpgimgp0644.jpgimgp0645.jpgimgp0646.jpgimgp0647.jpg
I think it needs some light sanding and then some more weathering to dull it down a little bit. But of course, please let me know if see something not right, I would like to get as accurate as I can but not to the point of pulling my hair out. Thanks everyone!

Now we're talkin bud! Looks fantastic maybe a tad more weathering as you say, but overall some teriffic looking armour. Glad i have been of a little help, but I honestly dont think you need too much help, as judging from the pics, you're fully on top of it. Top stuff brother!

    It's really coming together now!
I think you're on the right track with the light sanding afterwards too. I'm working on a V2 set for myself and did the same thing and the sanding helped out a bunch. Great work on the misting part too. Keep up the good work bro!

Thanks for the nice comments guys! This has been soo nerve wracking! But I have definitely surprised myself! So glad I went with airbrushing and humbrol paints!
I have done some weathering today and dirtied it up a bit more, will post some pics tonight. Started with the pale coat of yellow on the shoulder bells today, so more masking for that and the back plate! Thanks for looking

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Thanks Bill, That's the plan mate! It'll be nice to meet you all at the end of this! Got a long way to go though!
So I've weathered and sanded very gently, I still need to get more splatter on it! Especially the lower part of the right chest plate. I have just put the next coat on top of the silver on the shoulder bells, Im using Humbrol Pale Yellow (81), that will show around the silver damage. I have decided against airbrushing the decals or emblems, as the the thought of doing it is way too scary now! So I am going to hit up Bobamaker for some weathered decals. It is really hard to see all the detail and colour on this..... I know everybody seems to say the same thing but its true! Here's the pics.
imgp0648.jpgimgp0649.jpgimgp0652.jpgimgp0651.jpgimgp0650.jpgimgp0657.jpgimgp0656.jpgimgp0655.jpgimgp0653.jpgimgp0658.jpgimgp0659.jpg Here's an example of the pale yellow.... http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/galle...-Britt-088.jpg

Wow! Now that's an excellent paint job! Some of the scratches indeed looks a bit bigger, but the overall image is awesome and with that dark misting you gived the specific ROTJ look. Why don't you try to do the decals yourself?

Wow! Thank you so much for the nice words, it really is very special to get these comments from yourself, as I hold you in such high regard Rafa. Total respect, thanks mate!
I had considered doing the decals but if I make a mess of it....... wait then I just get the decals and stick over the top! Im going to do it!!!!!
Also Rafa, I was wondering if you could help me to make the oversized marks a little less obvious. I know it will be hard to get 100% but I would like to get it a bit closer! Any help would be great thanks!

I'm glad you consider doing the decals by hand. Download the ROTJ decals from the ==> All Boba Fett Chest and Shoulder Decals thread, resize it if needed, then use carbon paper to trace the decal to the desired armor part and paint it with a brush. I know you can do it!

I say just leave it as it is, because the oversized scratches are not so big to bother the eyes. You really did a great paint job with the excellent RKD armor!

Didn't get much done today, just doing some masking and starting to prepare for the decals stencils..... but I did manage to get some pics in daylight! Just so you can have a look at the armour in a much better exposure. I hope you all still like it as much!! Ha ha!

Don't worry, it looks awesome in the hot Australian sun! Just use the same patience in all of your works and it will be top quality.

I like how you misted the armor here to give it the highlights. It gives the armor a great layer of depth!

Hey thanks clonecollector! Yeah its amazing looking back at the base green colour, seeing how dull and lifeless it is before all the misting and peeling all the masking back! Going to try some more extreme splatter tomorrow! Another heart in your throat kind of moment!

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Well this post is a big turnaround from the last bunch of pics as I hit a major low in my build, I got a bit over confident after all the great comments I was flying a bit too high! Firstly, the medallion, I forgot to check my gun before misting and ruined my paintwork, so I have rubbed it down and will start again..... I went ahead with painting the decals and it turned out to be a disaster! I wont go into all the details but needless to say I should have taken the easy way out, and just got the decals! I did put a lot of care into it,but I think I was just a bit inexperienced in something that precise. I made a stencil for the two first layers and thought I would freehand the red lettering. but after the white layer which bled under the stencil! then the red was too thin and ran anyway, I learned!!!!
    imag0756.jpgimag0755.jpgimag0758.jpgimag0759.jpgimag0757.jpg
So I tidied it up abit before hitting it with the "misty" black matt! At least I know what im doing with the black matt! It looks ok from a foot away!! haha! Should I keep, or cover it?
After all the disaster I would like to give a special mention to a new friend I have met right here on TDH! You all know him as Jayvee, He has gone above and beyond with the help he has given me and has always made the time to type back to me with all my ridicules questions and scenarios, he's always made the time! He is awesome guy! Its people like him that make me believe in people again. He is also super talented, and has done an incredible job painting an ESB lid, which is **** near flawless! He will soon be doing a ROTJ paint up, so check him out!!!....... All I can say is Jayvee .... What a guy! mate!

It's not as bad as I thought it will be as I read the beginning of the above post. Altough the decal indeed looks washed, you can always do some touch-ups with a small brush. Don't loose your confidence in this, you have the talent to do it (patience is the key).

Firstly, thanks for the kind comments brother! always happy to help anyone who asks my advice, so all too easy my friend :-)

Now with your paint up, like Raf, I thought it may be far worse. With some touchups with a 000 brush, I think its very salvagable, but with your decals on the way, if it all gets a little too much, then you have the easy option of sanding it back, and reapplying a green misted layer carefully before going with the decal. With me, I tend to be really pedantic, so if I couldnt touch up the painted version up enough that I was totally happy, then id reassess, and go with decals. But go with whatever you think looks best brother :-) keep up the great work!

Thanks Rafa! I definitely need more patience! I tried to touch it up a little, it doesn't look great up close... but ok from a distance. Not sure how to touch it up now as I've weathered it with misting. I'm just worried about making things worse than it is. I really need more patience.... I really hope I get it before my bobamaker helmet gets here! Because I want to do my absolute best on that! This is becoming a big obsession... hahaha! Maybe I need a break!

Thanks Jayvee! Hey mate I could of said a whole lot more!
Yeah mate you're spot on and I will try to salvage it but I wont agonize over it, as thankfully I have another option!
I really love doing this and its great to be learning so much! Stay tuned, I will post my salvage efforts soon!

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Hey there good peoples! I cant believe how awesome the people are on this site! It truely is a brotherhood/sisterhood on here! I received a gift from a good friend on here, some decals and an awesome fettronics chest display....and I am blown away! Thanks mate, truly gobsmacked!!
    imgp0679.jpgimgp0676.jpgimgp0673.jpgimgp0675.jpg
I have done some work and I really need advice on this cause Im not real sure! I have touched up my chest emblem decal thingy and I think it is much better than it was, but not perfect. It looks great from a few feet away!
    imgp0687.jpg
I have finished most of the painting on my shoulder bells and I am unsure about the colours. I haven't given it a gentle sand yet, so I'm hoping that melds things together and takes a little of the orange misting back a bit. I had a little problem as I masked the silver a couple of weeks ago before laying the first yellow on. I probably left it on a little too long as it is reluctant to come off! So much so, in my haste I picked it past the primer! Luckily its a tiny nick, so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to touch up.
    imgp0694.jpgimgp0695.jpg
Looking at the whole picture on the floor and am starting to feel very chuffed with myself! Never thought I would be this happy with it so far!

Looking fantastic mate - i'm so rapt that chest display worked out, looks awesome. The decals are an interesting one. Tough call, but i'd almost be inclined to leave as is unless you are cringing every time you look at it. From here, it actually looks pretty neat. The thing I really like about your painted decal, is if you look at pics of ROTJ or ESB (like the one I put in this post), the fern on the decal is actually not crisp like the sticker decal I sent, but more like your painted version, with a few of the 'leaves' not uniform. So I think it actually looks really authentic. My personal call - I would leave as is m'man. Lovin your work brother!

**** that looks awesome man!! It's so tempting not to buy a RKD armor set right now. The fettronics display tops it off so nicely.

Thanks guys! You are all way too nice!

Thanks jayvee, you really are too kind my friend! I totally agree about the decal and to be honest I am starting to like mine! Lol! I know it's far from perfect and looks a bit rough up close but stand back a couple of feet and BOOM! It looks ok!
I think I might have to do some work on my back armor next.....
Feeling quite confident when my bobamaker helmet gets in that I will do a good job now! But don't worry I'm far from cocky! I am very much the apprentice to all my TDH masters on here!
The bad news is Daz has broke his foot the poor man, he is struggling on but he is in a wheelchair trying to get his work done. Bless him! I think I'm in for a wait though!

Looking great, so for. Just ordered a set from RKD myself and if mine turn out anywhere near this good, I'll be the happiest guy on these boards.

I have to say reading this thread was great, It's nice to see someone jump in and paint their armor and give anything a go. I like your emblem and think it does look good, I think you have done exceedingly well, including touch-ups (or damage control).
I have painted a few sets of armor and each time I do I always do something different. Each difference being a mistake learned from and an improvement applied.
The final look of your armor is great and I'm looking forward to seeing any future developments

That's such a nice thing to say Fettwho! Thank you very much!

I have said before about how supportive this little community is and it really does lift you up, and(for me) it does stop my overly self critical eye from picking apart all the mistakes(and maybe even quit!) and to step back and look at the whole thing.... to see that you have done a good job.
I really have been struggling with my confidence with this, But because of so many awesome people taking their time to leave some encouragement, compliment or even to point out a flaw or some better way of doing things is what makes the difference. I don't know anyone in my life that shares the same passion for Boba Fett or even star wars! So it means even more to me, that you have given me some of your time. So thank you all and believe me... how good this Fett turns out is because of each and everyone of you! Im not really that sure I would have got this far! Thanks everyone!

I have to say reading this post gives me hope that I (someone that has zero artistic ability) can paint my own armor. Also the RKD armor looks great, I think I will be buying some in the near future.
It's really good to see that everyone here is willing to help noobs like me and others that are not the most gifted artists.

Hey thanks Jc27... Your dead right, this is an awesome site... I think we all underestimate ourselves when we start these builds. I am definitely not the handiest of people, but have done a little bit of art.. Drawing mostly. But it's all a trial and error kind of thing... But thanks to the good people on this site, there are much fewer errors! RKD is awesome armor.. I'm saving up to get the rest of the gauntlets greeblies. I have to say I am totally addicted to this site, I have spent countless hours on here and love looking at all the awesome builds.... Starting to feel less noob ish now!

Paint can always be stripped off or sanded and primed to start over if you mess it up too bad.

    Hey friends! I'm back!
I'ts been way too long being off the boards with nothing to report, but I am trying to get my mojo back and bring you all some progress on my build. I have had some personal issues to attend to and have been a bit low of late.... but am trying to snap myself out of it and get my passion back!
I looked through my thread for the first time in months and had almost forgot how awesome you people are! The other thing I noticed was how good my armour was looking! So I'm feeling more motivated to restart my love affair with dear Boba!
Thanks to all out there who have taken the time to help me in the past and give there time to guide me...
Stay tuned folks, hopefully I have some pics to show soon ...

I'm glad this thread is helping you! I have tried to be honest and show everyone what we can all do with no experience and not much in the way of handyman skills! I am starting today and Bobamaker has confirmed my helmet has been shipped! YAY!! So I am really excited at the prospect of having the key element of Boba fett, here in my home. Thank you for looking.... more updates soon!

Hobbit, loving the armor! The paint job is just incredible, I hope mine comes out a fraction as good as yours. Really inspiring me too order some armor and paint it.

Speaking of armor I just pm'd you redkraydragon regarding eventually purchasing some of your wonder full looking armor.

Hey Unfathomable! Thanks my friend, but way too kind! If I can do this anyone can, It was my first time and next time I would do things very different but I happy with my first go. I think the look is down to airbrushing and Humbrol paints... and more importantly the great advice on this site! But it is definitely my favorite part, the painting... the assemble and trimming not so much

    MATE! Looks great!

You're really making me want to get my hands on a set this armour and start my build.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Hey Hobbit, your armor looks amazing man! I hope that when I eventually start my project, my armor will come out half as good. I got a question for you on the RKD armor. I am 6'3 and weigh aprroximately 220. I workout a lot, so I have a fairly large chest and I'm a little wider than average. Would the RKD armor still fit my build? Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated, as I am brand new to all this. Thanks for your time.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

RKD did his armor using Alan's (wizardofflight) large templates, which is good for a 6' tall individual, so you are in the acceptable range. And you can always arrange the chest plates (by making the distance a bit bigger between the plates, but not too much, you don't want to look weird) so it will look OK on you. Will (RKD) is a great guy and there are many customers who bought parts or whole sets and they praise the great service and communication with him.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

Raf, thanks for the info. Thats the one thing I am worried about is either the plates to far apart or them looking to small on me. I don't want to look weird, like you said. I definitely want to go the route of an armor kit versus trying to make my own armor. Any advice you have for someone new like myself, on where to start out?

Hey Craig! Thanks again my friend. As Raf said RKD is an absolute pleasure to deal with! It is much better than the bin armour I started with. I am super happy with it. Good luck to you, on the start of your build.

Re: Boba Fett ROTJ SE with RKD armor

While doing and painting your own armor is a good starting point (especially that it IS made by yourself) it doesn't look as good as a professionally crafted and molded set of armor. The first option is more in the budget range, while the second one will bite a bit from your wallet, but is more accurate and visually good looking. Hobbit has posted in the first post his first armor paint job, which was a scratch build one, and although it is well painted, it is in no way as good as the RKD paint job he did in this thread. You choose...

Thanks again so much for the great words guys (hobbit and Rafa), it means a lot and I appreciate that.
Hobbit, you're doing an amazing job on the paint with this bro (I'm assuming you're using Rafa's awesomely accurate stencils) so keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to seeing this all come together along with your helmet
