Helmet Scratch Build

BlackKnight

New Hunter
Hello,

I'm new to the forum and wanted to make my helmet from scratch. I started one with EVA foam and it did not turn out well at all. I found the Antman build and began using his method with the same materials. The mat board is hard to cut with a hobby knife, but its coming along. I wanted to post some pictures so that I could get some feedback as to how I'm doing and if anyone would like to share some tips. I'm going very slow as to not make any mistakes so posting may take some time. I am having trouble uploading pictures so please be patient. Thanks

Heres the inner and outer areas and the dome base.

Not sure what kind of hobby knife you are using but it is important to change blades regularly. The best kind I could suggest would be the retractable kind that you can break off the tips of the blade to expose a sharp blade. I believe it is the kind antman used in his tutorial. Also, to get to cleanest, sharpest lines with your knife you need to make several passes with it and not try to cut the board with one or two passes. Looks good so far. Keep it up.

To add to what shortfuse said, don't try to cut through in 1 pass. Use less pressure and make slower cuts until you cut through the material. This will allow for more accuracy and save you from mistakes.

I have so much respect for the scratch builders! I wish I had the patience, but I really need instant or semi instant gratification! I'm excited to see how your build progresses!

Here is the inner surface and the braces for the dome. I have no idea why they didn't meet in the middle.

here is the outer part of the helmet. I'm going to use a spray bottle to get it to curve before I glue it on.

I set the front on with glue and hope it works. I'm going to leave it alone for a while and hope it sets up well. Some places are not sticking so I hope I can go back and reattach them.

looking like a good start :) as far as i remember the dome supports should match together at the top, they dont look like they do in the picture

There is a section on the inner helmet template that says "extra material trim as needed". This should be left on in order for the ends to meet. You should be ok since this area is covered up by the outer layer and will eventually be cut out for the visor. The top of your dome supports should be flush. You might need to recut the slots so they they sit together flush or you my experience problems with your dome later on. Also, do not completely cut out the entire visor area until you are almost finished as this will greatly compromise the structural integrity of the helmet. Keep up the good work and take your time.

I used the extra material area on the template. Must have made a mistake gluing it somewhere. I fixed the dome braces so I hope that stays.

For the dome I was contemplating using mat board like the rest or buy card stock. I was having a hard time bending the board, using a spray bottle, and struggling with fraying. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Trying on my helmet again before trying to assemble the dome. I noticed that the visor rest were my forehead would be. I was hoping to take the dome braces out and making longer ones before it's too late. Or have I ruined it and need to start over?

So I've lengthened the dome supports and modified the dome itself. Finally got the dome attached and I realize that Tim going to be thankful for bondo. Trying to upload pictures, not working.
