Casting question

Okay,
now let me prefis this with IT IS ONLY A DISCOUSSION WITH A FRIEND WHO WANTS TO CAST PROP STUFF.

I was talking with a buddy of mine who wants to get into casting stuff. he does great work but is not so much of a modeler. his theory is to go and buy a set of (what ever he is casting at the time) the worst quality castings and fix them up. completly rework them into a top quality product. I myself think this is a bad idea, or more likely frown apon this idea. he thinks that if he completly reworks the parts that it makes it okay. please fire away with your opinions. now his thought process is that if he reworks it that it is a new product. not that it is his, but that it is a new item.

Have you asked your friend why he wants to do this? Is this a business venture? Is he hoping to improve his molding skills without the bother of creating the model?

If all he wanted was one copy, he would only need to buy/build it once, and you have your model.

Really, there is only one reason to to mold and cast something, and that is to make multiple copies. Why does he want multiple copies of something unless they are inventory for sale?

Copying someone elses work is alway a bad idea on so many levels. IF you are going to go to all the trouble of modifying something so much that it doesn't look like the original any more, why not just start from scratch and build it the way you want? - Same amount of work.

If you would like to give your friend some advice, tell him to try his hand at creating something, rather than just copying something. The satisfaction factor is much greater.

Stormtrooperguy, I agree with you there. I guess he thinks if he does a great enough job it would be a "all sins would be forgiven" type thing. I told him if I caught him copying my stuff I would break his fingers.

Wes, I dis agree with you there. I know I have myself tried to build a fet helmet from scratch and it look no so nice. but I feel even I could clean up a messed up helmet.

You know Clonesix, I do not really know why he wants to do this unless he is wanting to sell them... I thought maybe he would do it to buy something cheap and fix it up to have something nice. I guees I need to ask that question. he did not talk about making copie(s) just re working it so he could cast it. I guess this is where we differ as people, I tend to thin one way and just assume everyone thinks the same way. I can see redoing the part if it was for myself and I wanted to make it better.
