I have been working on this for a little while. I haven't mentioned it since there was another member making a kit that does the same thing, but I was contacted by Dakota (MachineCraft Replicas) to see if I had anything. The kit is in the final stages and should be available soon (I am still working on what to use as a LED diffuser).
It will run off of a 9v battery and have 2 toggle switches; one for power and another for mode selection. The kit will have 3 modes for the LED: on, blink, and fade. Everything is contained inside the enclosure (except the LED).
Here is a vid of the prototype. Let me know what you all think.

Looks great, I like having switches to turn the light on and off instead of having to pull the battery each time.

Yes. The led is not too bright, the vid is a little misleading. I am thinking of getting a lower value mcd led to soften it as well as use a diffuser to make it look more like an incandescent light bulb.

what does the inside of the beacon look like?
i was going to suggest gel for theatrical lighting. frost gel. Cut a strip and line the inside of the beacon. it will definitely decrease the harshness of the light source.

We're would you get that at? It may work and I would like to try it out.

Price isn't finalized but I'm looking at $60 including shipping (PayPal fee not included) for USA shipping maybe $68 for international shipping.

It's gel used by lighting companies and theaters. I work for a lighting company. If you want you should order from a company like bulbtronics. Or pm me an address and ill mail you a couple samples, no charge.

Here is another video with the kit installed in my jetpack. I 3d printed a diffuser using the transparent filament and it looks pretty good. It looks really bright in the video, but its not really that bright, although I may play around with upping the current limiting resistor to dim the LED a bit more.
