    ROTJ Blaster

    You will need:
One resin Webley kit (I recomend Sidewinder's )
    Plastic pipe
    scope
    Resin scope rings
    assorted greeblies
plenty of 'T' shape material (I shall be using blast-tech flavour)

Yeah, I was thinking you could even sell "resin" cooling vanes to keep the cost down. I don't know, just an idea.

most of the guttering pipes (looks like them in your photo) in the US are rectangle/square (at least here - although I havent really looked hard yet) so the dia of pipe, and the pipes are usually much thicker than the uk types, so you supplying the pipes would be a great start/addition (hint, hint)...

That's what I'm sayn! If you make a "complete kit" to go with the kit you already offer, I think you would probably get alot of interest.

    Re: ROTJ Recipe

I've done some aly blocks for the scope to sit on and am turning a biggish piece of aly for the muzzle based on pics of the real one.

Are lathe motors supposed to smoke??

Regards pipes and the ROTJ, I would do the muzzle/barrel/T fins all as one piece so it could be slipped on over the webley barrel.

Pic now added - it's almost too good to paint!

I'm thinking of doing a casting of the whole lot as one piece, including the Webley bit seen in the pic. That way I could cast up just the finned/white bit or the whole lot depending on what people want/have already.

There is a handy layout diagram of the rib position on the barrel that I used (Ta whoever). Except it shows the front scope block replacing a section of one rib, whereas I believe it should go between two ribs. The photos of a real prop back this up.

Ribbed for your pleasure (Scope blocks not fixed in place.):

Since I recently got the Webley kit from ebay, I was wondering if you will offer casts of the barrel, the scope and the scopeclamps too.

Scope rings are molded, working on the barrel etc. That scope is just a cheap 4x20

I would be interested in a full kit as well. I don't think it would look right with the cooling fins molded in. IMO they need to be sharp and crisp, as this is what defines the ROTJ blaster. Did you use an o-ring for the mid chamber ring?

    Thanks PW.

If I did do a mold of the barrel with fins, the castings would be exactly the same as the original - painted up you wouldn't see the difference between original and casting.

The narrow ring is just a thin slice of the white pipe split and glued on place.

The large one is a scratchbuild scaled from the small one and the pics of the prop shown.
Should be pretty bang on size-wise.

Nawp, so I do get some bubbles like on the top corners of some of the fins - but they're easy to fill. I always try to minimise them by mold design and 'squidging' the mold while the resin is liquid.

How long is the blaster? Could you measure the entire length?

Also, could you measure the section of the barrel that has the t-tracks?

I'm curious to see if this is an accurate length.

The tube bit between where the webley ends and the fins start is approx 3", the finned bit is approx 8" and the total length is just under 30.5" I scaled it off a bigger version of the pic below.

    PM me for details etc.

which is just about exactly the length of my sci-fire one. 2 people coming up with the same number definitely lends credibility to that number.

    I'll go home and check.

The bomb rack greeblie is a known part. Once you know the size of that, you can scale the correct length of the entire blaster. I'm pretty sure the Sci-Fire, which I also have, is too short.

According to MR the length of the blaster is going to be 32 5/8 long.

    interesting...

i'll try to get a side by side shot of mine and the one in the case tomorrow. the scaling will be a bit off since it will be about 3" in front of the one in the case, but it should be easy enough to tell a difference of 2 inches at that distance.

Here's a quick (& crapy) layover. The green is the original blaster, & the blue is a sci-fire blaster. The length seems to be a little short, & on the original it looks as if the stock has been trimed down a bit.

I do have molds for all the ROTJ parts now, (apart from the two little fins on the sides of the ringed tube) so I could do if there was any interest.

Nice and dirty - looking great...

Which begs a question... Surely to make sure that your blaster/gun would work, you make sure its clean, and all moving parts, well, move (I'm sure any soldier would agree to this)... So why is his blaster so dirty...?

Here's the template I used for my grip stuff, modified from the one that's on here somewhere but more accurate in terms of scope block placement IMO.

    gotcha!

now - I take it that that placement is on top of the tube - so the rest of the cuts (the smaller pieces) of the grip are put on that way?

    Re: ROTJ Recipe

Aaargh! Now you tell me! I used the same template un-modified, so my front scope block is cut in to the fin.

And what really sucks is...you're absolutely right. Just been going over some close-ups from the MOM exhibition and the ones from Boston. The scope block on the original prop IS between the fins. Can't believe I didn't see that before. Well spotted.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can rectify it. I have spare fin material, so hopefully I can prise off the old one (it's glued with epoxy!!) and replace it, then rotate the barrel.

Nice work Sidewinder, and great castings.

Actually if it were a "real" laser blaster it would'ent have a "hammer" and also probably not have any external moving parts either. But hey, it's just a movie riiiiiight

Got my kit through today... Thanks Sidewinder! Looks great... Can't wait to start putting it together... Which brings me to a question...

I read somewhere the way to attach the ring to the scope when the ring has the attach screws formed in it, about cutting the actual ring, opening the ring as it is flexible, putting in the scope and re-bond it shut? That right?

Wish I could find the thread...

    Re: ROTJ Recipe

    Good news.

Yeah, if you cut the ring along the top of one of the side plates with a razor saw (leaves no gap) you should then be able to slip it over the scope and glue in place. I've done this cold many times on buildups with no breakages. However you could warm the part 1st in water (after cutting) and then do it - this will make resin more flexible.
