So after trying to die my girth I finally lost it and went down to my neighborhood paint store. I brought a color so they could match it correctly and bought a LATEX stain to die it with. It worked amazing and its so much easier and it does'nt rub off on your flightsuit. So heres what I did

First I get my paint roller liner, stain and girth ready to die.

Then I pour the stain in the liner and begin to soak the girth untill its obsorbed enough stain so theres no white showing. Make sure you force it in with your fingers and hands.

Then once you have it soaked with stain your gona want to ring out the excess stain so it can dry quicker.

Your going to want to hang it up so it can dry but while its hanging get a rag and blot out as much excess stain as you can. Make sure you don't rub it or it will fray, only blot it. Then when thats done just let it air dry for about 24 to 48 hours and your all set. The key thing is to only get latex stain because all other stains will eat and corrode your girth. A pint of stain costs about thirty bucks but it saves you all the headaches that come along with dyes. A pint will dye two girths so if your doing more then that I suggest to buy a gallon. I have only done this in ROTJ color but they can match any color you like.

Every paint store gives you a different code, so make sure you save that code when you get the color you need.

Thats funny, thats how I usually die, but I use thinned down water base paint. Thats great. Also, if you have a heat gun it can speed up the dry time. But if you let it dry naturally, it is better.

One question, whats the results. I know mine always comes out kinda harder then when it went in as I stain with water based paint, but with what you use, is the fabric still the same for the most part? I suppose yes?

It gets a little stiff untill you work it around and then its just like new. I forgot one thing this stuff is perminant so make sure you like the color you choose. Since its latex it cleans up wicked sweet.

if you rub Vasoline on the buckles, the paint won't adhere to them. then just wash it off.

Thats a working color in the pics and you do not need acetone, just stain. JUst find a color that matches whatever belt your doing and bring the color to the paint store. Show the guy or girl working there and have them match the color. If you don't like the color have him/her lighten or darken it to your liking.

Can anyone pass on to me the exact paint properties needed to actually do this myself.. Ive been wanting to do it myself over here in Australia, and it was a pain in the *** just to get the Mahair Girthbelt through customs, took weeks to clear, and after the Irradiation it may stuff up the paint.. :S plus sending paint internationally costs heaps as a dangerous good transport.. :S

Basically Brand Names really dont work, however details like the Stain used ie Wax Stain, not a Stain and Finish, Red Mahogany Colour etc... Mostly after the paint properties... Since we dont really have a Colonial Red over here it would require mixing, which could get disasterous if not done right, assuming doing a girth this way is a one shot deal... Im mostly after what type of paint ie weatherguard (outside), interior, acryllic, enamel, etc... as much help you can give would be awesome

I have tried this method as well and ''it works'' not to mention it was quick and easy. Forget dying the girt belt ,this is definetly the best route. BTW I used china red stain and the results are good.

No it's not the same. The latex stain is specifically for wood, normally used on decks and the like (people will look at you strange if you tell them what you plan to do with it... beware).

The only problem with any type of spray products is that the belt does not suck up enough of the paint so it leaves areas of white here and there.

Well whistle8mp, it worked fantastic and it was sooo easy. No more than 30 minutes from start to all cleaned up. I went with the China Red and I think it looks darn good.

Bountyone, good suggesting Vaseline on the hardware, but the water based stain wipes right off the metal.

So would these be what I see on the store shelves as "water-based" stains? I haven't been able to find any that say latex.

From the colours available, I'm thinking I'll try rosewood for the ESB belt. It's a very nice brown with a nice, warm red undertone.

dont buy the nylon girths! i bought two thinking i was getting a sweet deal and the dont die. basically cuz they are palstic. also someone asked about spray paint. ive done that befor too and in my experiense for some reason the smell never comes out if u spray paint fabric i even did fabric spraypaint. i live in a more rural area so im going to take my 2 nylon belts and see if i can trade someone with horses for there old ones. plus im trying to get5 enough hair to do a wookie braid run.

This is for the Mod staff to decide, I was hoping to make this thread a sticky since dyeing a girth is one of the hardest soft parts of the suit. It seems to me that it would help up and comers as well.

Tried the "stain" method after turning a girth belt light pink via several RIT dyes packs. The "stain" worked like a charm and is infinately easier than dye. Good call.

i spray painted my girth. not good. did not cover all the white areas. belt got really hard and flaky. smelled like spraypaint gave me a head ache. has anyone tried latex paint. i know it's not the same but will it work.

Latex paint is gonna be too thick, and will coat the material, rather than permiate it. It will prolly come out looking very plasticine when all's said and done. I'm personally gonna be going with the stain. Remember, you get what you pay for.

save yourself some trouble, mate. Put your white girth up for sale in Cargo Hold. Go to horseloverz and order your girth in brown. Your white girth will sell quick. Heck, depending on size, I may buy it.

Ahhh. I checked Marystack and doversaddlery, as well. No luck. Brown is the color you seek, though. Go check the galleryu section and look at the ESB reference pics, so you know the proper shade of brown. My advice would be to pick out the color swatch for the exact color you want... then get a a swatch 1 to 2 shades darker than that color and have your stain mixed to that darker color. the reasoning being, that once you die your girth and rinse it out... it will lighten at least one shade lighter because you are dying a white material. So, if you go a bit darker on your stain, the end result will be closer to what you want.

First and foremost, a HUGE thank you to whistle8mp!!!

Okay. I did this as a two part process in order to achieve a darker color (especially on the bindings which tend to be a blend rather than straight up mohair).

First I dyed it, wrung it out and hung it up to dry. Start early, cause drying takes a long time.

Second, repeated the process, except I allowed the belt to lay in the dye and soak for approximately 10-15 minutes. Then, ring her out and hang her up again.

If you can have someone help you by holding up the belt whilst you ring it out, it makes the process easier and much faster.

The second tint step acts subtly, but definetely worth the added effort. Also, this particular stain darkens as it dries.

The color I used can be picked up at any Lowe's:

Minwax water-based stain, #13 Spice Red

They have to mix it for you, as it is a decoration tint formula. But that color is a standard Minwax tint color. Hope this has been helpful.

Not really messy at all. If you do a good job wringing it out, there will be hardly, if any, dripping when it's hung. Why not just order your belt in brown? Just curious.

Seems like this is one of the hardest parts of the costume to get accurately done yourself.. I mean the ROTJ is a nice and deep colour of red, ESB on the other hand is more a darker brown/reddish colour which i havent seen alot of.

Is someone here willing to make one for me? Iam working op a ESB Fett project and would definalty like a good dark brown/red girth belt.

I guess the weathering would also add up to a darker more used colour, it would definatly make it darker.

The don't make a brown in anything smaller than a 44 from what I've seen.
