My ROTJ journal

Life keeps throwing curve balls my way, we have had a family bereavement today so things are on hold for this as its family time now, but I will carry on as much as I can.

So I have now got the harness and back plate to meet up with the jet pack! finally. now that's all fitted I can start the weathering and paint the armor :$

I have taken in the neck seal as it was a bit large for me so I have cut a section out and tailored it to me

I got the holes cut for the harness and the cross bar and stitched them closed but I will get them hemmed in and nice looking over the next few days

And a layer of silver on the armor :)

anyone know of a good ROTJ paint template or guide I can follow? thanks.

So I could not help it, I had to do a dress out :cool

Totally blown away when I looked in the mirror to be honest....

It needs a little tweaking here an there, the girth belt I will me making a new one as I felt it was to short and didn't wrap around enough... So all I need to do now is tweak the set up, paint it, weather it and get some spare up together and a sort of field repair kit just in case something pings off

So so so close now I can finally see the end, I need to get a giant bag as well to cart this lot to Con's... I dont fancy half dozen plastic shopping bags if I am honest....

On a side note the Aker voice system the helmet cooling fan's and the audio pic up is just 100% worth the effort I would recommend putting them into your set up (y)

More done today,

that took most of the day doing that from set up to clean up.. tomorrow I will be hitting the soft parts with weathering and the armor plates to. and I should be almost done, however, I have to make a whole new girth belt! the one I made is to small and does not meet round the back arrghh!

oh well I am doing ok for time so I can still get one made up ( I hope) if anyone in the UK has a ROTJ girth belt going please do let me know as it will same me time (y)

And even more done... I have started weathering all the soft parts and the armor

Here is a little tip when weathering gloves if using an air brush, inflate a rubber glove inside it to take out any folds that may overlap and not get hit by the paint

I also found packing tape and clingfilm wrap around my body made a nice simple cast to act as a insert for the flight suit when spraying, again it will puff it all out and take out any folds in the suit.

I have started to weather down the plates but I feel the shoulder bells could do with dulling down a bit more.

I have used this clear coat and its fantastic

It will seal up anything and drys in about 10 min's with no residue, good for acrylic and enamel paint (y)

Almost!

Getting closer
20160214_142918_zpskmijsvcv.jpg

but I am officially done with the air gun :sleep well I mention it my set up has never been ''top quality'' but I have been using this 25 year old air pump for all my spraying needs for the last decade, I remember playing with it when I was kid in the garage. and of course the little £10 air brush I have had for a few years now... never let me down part from some dried paint a few months ago... I bought a new set up that I don't use or even like

Old!! but not obsolete (y)

What next....well I do have a snag list of little issues I need to take care of so I will get on them next and tweak everything else as I go....but as it stands I am 95% finished

Wot was the process in painting the armour ?

Primer then silver car spray paint, mask off silver damage to dents etc... spray over that masked area with yellow 157 humbrol paint, peel off mask then re apply masking fluid to now silver and yellow damage, apply green 78 humbrol to certain areas as highlighted in one of the stencils.. then use tamiya xf 63 acrylic over the top of it all...Then peel away, when the paint is tacky you can scratch it up with a razor here and there...

If that's to confusing I will get round to a simple tutorial.

@ funkyred it won't be long before its done....just waiting on girth belt parts

Wow ! Simply inspirational , you make it sound so simple . I am really nervous about painting mine . I would love to see the finished item in person . Did you say you were going to an event in the UK ?

practice on a bit of card or something, with an airbrush, really is fun and not hard at all, once you have the flow of things going it becomes something you don't even think about (y)

and yes I am going to a few events this year, the first is March 5th in my home town of Swindon at Meca, and another here in Swindon at the Steam Museum, that one will be loaded with props I think thats in June, and again in July for film comic con in London.

Ok thanks for the advice , I am toying with the idea of making stencils from masking film cut out instead of mask oil .other than that it may be the tried and trusted method .

cantxwait to see it all finished it looks awesome btw
