Hey Team,
I'm sorry if this has been discussed but I've been curious and the internet has been no help and I wanted the quick answer...laziness I guess. What does HERO stand for when describing "ESB Hero Helmet" for example...if it's an acronym I would like to know exactly what it spells out. From what I gather, Hero just refers to the filmed prop. So if I was doing an ESB Boba Fett Hero Helmet paint up, I wouldn't include the extra damage that was obtained over the years but try and get it as accurate to the filmed and screen used condition of the helmet. Am I incorrect in this matter?

Thanks!

A "hero" prop is the prop used for close up shots and is usually the best version of the prop, the one they want the viewers to know and recognize, the opposite of "stunt" pretty much. Stunt helmets/armor would be used for further away shots where exacting detail isn't a concern, and well....stunts lol. :). So the ESB hero is the ideal helmet and armor.

In the case with the ESB helmet paint stencils, "hero" is also used to differentiate the ESB Hero paint and the ROTJ SE Paint , which is the same helmet but became in a more naturally damaged state between the filming of ESB and ROTJ SE shots, so it doesnt look exactly like the helmet you see on screen in ESB. So yes, you are correct. Paint would be as seen during filming of ESB and NOT the post filming or current state of that exact helmet.

I think in filming terms, when something is classed as a "hero" prop, it's used by a named character, someone with a big role and is worn or used by the actor and not a 'stuntman', hence the term 'stunt' helmet. Like ANH stunt helmets were worn by the 'extras' and the hero helmets were worn by 'heroes' Han and Luke.

Any costume or part of it used in close shots and which has lots of details are called Hero. Costumes or suits with less details are used in wider shots and even in scenes where a stunt is needed (these are called stunt suits).

I'm already late to this party... Others answered already for you.

Yes hero props are used for close ups on the characters while stunt props are used for stunts and far away shots where accuracy and neatness of the prop dont matter as much.
