Deriak's build

Alright. I got my hinges on my gauntlets but the original epoxy I used isn't quite strong enough I think. So before the hinges come off I went ahead and and smeared some JB Weld on to them. Hopefully that will be strong enough.

In the mean time while I let that dry, I started putting together my bucket. It is a bit intimidating, but I think I got it. Still waiting for some of it to dry. I decided to go with detachable ears and range finder. I do not like the way these look and would like to install a servo for the range finder one day. Needs a bit more tweaking.

I am about to start on my helmet pretty soon. Hopefully this weekend i will finish my armor and have it attached to my vest. I think i am just going to go with the velcro way for now. Maybe later i will do the magnets.

When I start my Helmet, should I keep posting here or start a Build Thread in the helmet section?

Got my right gauntlet pretty much finished.. I first tried the epoxy, it held but when I started to put the pin in it began to pop off. Before it came off completely, I went ahead and put JB weld over it to secure it. It is holding up just fine

I used gorilla glue on the heads on right... I didn't realize it would foam up like that.. Not using that again.Glad its on the inside at least

Great looking work man. I am a newer user myself and I am loving this site already! So much informative info. I can't wait to start building my costume!

Thanks. It's my first build and I know all the imperfections in it though. I will do a better job next time. I just wanted to get a good base to work with and get better stuff later. Patience is the key. Also finding time to do it. Also money. Trying not to get cheap stuff and watching the Cargo Hold every day to see if a good deal pops up. It happens. Try not to give yourself a dead line. That just makes it less fun.

I finally got around to finishing my weathering on my chest armor.. I think it looks a lot better. Just waiting on my clear coat to come in from megahobby and then I will seal it and then install the chest display.

Worked on the left gauntlet last night a bit also. Got my rocket located and started working on my flame thrower. Using RKD's magnet tutorial to help me put it together. I actually used the extra strip of abs plastic I had when trimming the gauntlet to fit forearms. I cut them to size and used epoxy to create reinforcement walls. I was thinking about using the magnets to attach the bottom piece. I have an idea being that my reinforcement walls are not as thick as RKD's to have a removable bottom piece. Going to epoxy bolts to the flamethrower and have nuts in the gauntlet. So that will be removable also.

YAY! PROGRESS!

Test Fit

Tell me if I need to fix anything. Other than weathering on the flight suit, this was just to see if I got the chest armor lined up correctly. I used velcro, later I will upgrade and make it more permanent.

I need Criticism

Quick question. What color are the gauntlets in a Humbrol paint? Are they the same as the Mandibles? I have humbrol 73, is that dark enough? Or should I mix with something else like the mandibles suggest with humbrol 100? Been searching build threads but everyone seems to be using Floquil boxcar or wisconsin central maroon... I would rather use Humbrol if possible.

Got my helmet cleaned up and primered

Helmet primer.jpg

In the process of stirring my humbrol 11 silver paint, it dropped and wasted an entire tinlet of paint. Luckily I got 1 more left.. was being extra careful with it.

Went ahead and sprayed the silver down, going to let that dry and will mask it off later tonight

fit good without the flight suit. Flight suit makes it pretty snug so it doesn't move around much

Deriak,

Don't know if its me, but your flamethrower looks a little odd on your left gauntlet. There should be no space between the flamethrower and the gauntlet near the tip which there looks to be..

Here's a picture of my left gauntlet.

For comparison purposes here is the link to the gauntlet tutorial.

There are a bunch of screen captures in the TDH gallery you can examine...keep in mind I believe there were three different costumes. The best images of the gauntlet that I can show comes from the exhibition which showed close up of the gauntlet.

Not sure what you're seeing, but if you're going to post pics of your own as reference, then post actual reference, you should make sure your own are accurate. Specifically looking at the switch on the side and that light.

Did you even click the bottom link I gave?

Using the link that I provided and one of Deriaks images let me post the following image.

gauntlet image.png

Note the area highlighted in Green versus the area highlighted in Red. The front of the flame thrower comes to the very front of the gauntlet (as shown in the gauntlet templates link I linked) and there should be no gap in the front between the flamethrower and the gauntlet. There appears to be some gap as shown by shadows in the picture. I hope this helps.

Yea. I see what you mean. And it's an issue that I cannot fix unless without getting a new set of gauntlets. The she'll bends too much inward and the flamethrower is pretty stiff with the reinforced brackets inside. I may be able to tighten that front nut down a bit more but don't want to risk breaking the epoxy I side.

It may be an imperfection I will have to live with for now until I get a new set or take it apart to add more screws.

I think you could build up the missing area with bondo....but other crafters here are much better than I am at this stuff.

Yea, probably so. I honestly don't feel like going through all that right now. Probably after DragonCon, when I got a bit more free time. Trying to get mine finished and my wife's Mafia Jinx within a month is keeping me from doing huge fixes. It's not very noticable, but it is annoying now that its been pointed out, hahah. So this will get fixed and will show how and what I did.

Thanks

Here is a top view of the gauntlet we are talking about. The shell is straight all the way up til that point where the key pad goes. Then it bends in a little bit. I didn't notice this when I was assembling it. I am not sure why I didn't notice it to be honest. I will say these were a pain in the butt to assemble though. Just didn't seem to line up right in many area's. May have just been something I overlooked.

Got some masking fluid on the back panels, and the shaded darker gray.I know this is not going to be screen accurate and the fluid is not exact by any means. I am trying to trace out the best as I can and get the fluid in the lines but I will say, it is REAL tough. At one point I just said, "as long as i got the general area dammit!".

I may get one of the pro's to paint one up for me next year.

Huh that is odd. Are those RKD gauntlets? If so that def shouldnt be like that, and is likely a flaw in the pull. Ive assembeld quite a few sets of those and never saw that. Im sure RKD would replace that part for ya if you got in touch. He is good people :)
