Hi newbie!
I know a few members here have but I'd say MLC all the way - 'course I'm a little biased by owning the set! Check out the recent MLC threads floating in armor & Rex is an absolutely fantastic guy to deal w/....

Or you can make a set out of PVC sheeting. There are quite a few of us on the board that have made it this way. Depending on budget it maybe the cheapest way of going. I got a 4'X8' sheet for $35.00 It is enough to get several sets of armor to practice with. the PVC is easily bent with steam or heat gun. If you are on a budget it is a way to go.
