Recommended thickness and material for metal plating

I am planning on making a suit of armour, mandalorian armour in particular, out of steel, or possibly aluminum, if I've got the money for it. I was wondering how thick the plating for it ought to be. Anyone who has made metal armour, I would appreciate any recommendations about thickness of the plating, or what material to use.

There's a like 5 part series on you tube called Besak'gam by one of the vods from the Mercs. Not only is it a great example of armor shaping he also mentions the thickness of the aluminum he used.

wouldnt metal be too heavy and sag?

The armor would be very heavy but if you can get a hold of a cast here is how you can get your aluminum hopefully this will help
