DrToothache's Jango WIP (Kamino)

Finally got Jango back up onto the mannequin after the con. Worked today on some armor weathering and tightening the jetpack harness so that it isn't so "floppy". Broke a gauntlet dart in the process, going to fix that soon.

Here are some pictures of the "Finished" jetpack. Not the final product but was I was able to do with brushed acrylics due to freezing weather. The colors are a little off, especially the shade of blue, but it will work for now. Going to a do a re-design of my jetpack harness to hold it more upright as it leans back a little bit even when fully tightened. I'm probably going to base the new one on seeker's design.

After that I will start weathering the leather ammo belt and holsters.

Did a suit up today to start getting ready for 501st approval. Note that I didn't have a helper this time so I don't have the backplate or jetpack on in these pictures (at least not at the same time as the rest of the armor, I managed to get it on with the flight suit just to test it out after tightening the harness more). This also made it difficult to fully secure the back of the girth belt, hence the girth belt doesn't have the fastener and isn't covered fully by the rear leather wrapping.

Still have a few fixes to do:
  • Remove inaccurate flare nut connected to the extension on right gauntlet
  • Cover the buttons attaching the straps of the boot armor to the boot
  • Adjust slit placements for shin armor to better hide elastic straps
  • Paint top of jetpack beacon silver
  • Replace leather holster straps (the ones that go around the thigh armor). They were too short so I currently have leather extensions on them - I am going to just replace the whole strap so that it is more accurate.

Some small changes tonight.

Adjusted the ammo belt placement on the girth belt so that it is more centered (was mounted a little bit too low previously showing more of the girth belt above it).

Finally removed the inaccurate flare nut on the right gauntlet's tapered extension. I know it is a small thing but it was driving me nuts.

I then replaced it with a pressure fitted nylon screw, reinforced with some super glue followed by adding 3 nylon nuts so that the hose can fit tightly over it.

Final result:

After this, I decided to make a better system to keep the hoses from popping out of the outer sleeve. I discretely sewed elastic straps with a D-ring under each sleeve.

I then attached elastic straps to the hoses, with a metal clip at the end of each one:

I tested this out with my flight suit, and finally I can move my arms freely without worrying about the hoses.

Another small update. The balaclava that I have been using is a navy blue one which is inaccurate and didn't match the flight suit very well. I ended up buying a white one and dying it myself with the same dye used for the flight suit.

Did a full suit up today, including backplate and Jetpack. Need to work on the shoulders a little bit more and tighten the girth belt ever so slightly so that the leather covering fully covers the closing mechanism.

Day 2 at Steel City Con and finally got to wear the Jango, and meet Temuera! Learned a lot wearing this for the first time and a had a few mixups (forgot my proper balaclava and had to improvise. Also forgot to tighten my Jetpack harness before putting everything else on - hence the floppy jetpack) but everything held up really well!

Great work! Looked phenomenal!

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback! Has definitely been a journey getting this kit and Boba together. Still have a few things to do before 501st application but it's getting close.

A few fixes since my last post.
  1. Adjusted buttonhole locations in flightsuit for knee and thigh armor straps so that they are not as visible.
  2. Adjusted weathering.
  3. Worked on "wearing out" the shoulders a bit more so that the shoulder armor doesn't stick out as much. Still need to work on them a bit more but they are getting better.

The lighting today was not ideal, was overcast weather which really seems to cause the camera to hide the weathering a bit. Some planned changes:
  1. Add some more weathering on the flakvest armor pieces to make it more prominent.
  2. Add more weathering to jetpack.
  3. Very slightly adjust the inner knee straps again so that they are not visible, much better than before though.
  4. Wear out those shoulders more to get the shoulders to lay down more.
  5. Adding some straps under the balaclava that attach to my undershirt to keep it from popping out of the flightsuit (you can see what I mean in that last picture)

501st Application submitted. Fingers crossed!

After taking the costume off I realized that my knee armor was slightly rotated inward during the indoor photographs...hopefully that's not too big of a deal. There are definitely still things that I want to do with this costume but hopefully everything is set for basic approval.

Received some feedback from my application. One of the needed fixes was weathering the jetpack more. I actually kind of expected this one, after submitting my application photos the jetpack looked really bright.

They also mentioned the different shades of medium blues for the helmet. The visor is supposed to be a lighter blue when compared to the upper cheeks, earcaps and rangefinder. My helmet is actually painted that way but I think the very bright lighting washed out some of the color range and created a lot of glare masking the difference between the blue paints.

To make sure it was correct though I went ahead and added some Rustoleum Royal Blue in the darker areas and Krylon Ocean Blue in the brighter areas. I also adjusted the weathering:

I also weathered the jetpack more. To do this I first did a black wash and then added more weathering by dry-brushing blacks and browns:

Looks great! Congratulations on approval!

I don't know why they gave you a hard time on the two tones on the helmet, it states right there on the CRL.

Thank you! Excited to start officially trooping.

At first I was confused about it, but after looking back at my initial application photographs it did kind of look like the same blue was used for the entire helmet. The bright lighting kind of washed out shades of blue. I probably could have just taken new photos to send but I added some paint just to be safe...

Either way, I am just happy that it is resolved :)

Just received an update from Christian at MoW, my JT-12 jetpack has shipped! And he shared these great photo's

The last item I am waiting on is a dented helmet (my current one has no dent) for my Version 2 / Geonosis Jango. I couldn't decide between the 2 builds so I had to do both versions...

My JT-12 Jetpack has been received and it looks even better in person. I have attached 2 of the 3 mounting buckles to the back of it. The screen accurate size for these buckles is 1.5" however I went with 1" buckles due to the 1.5" not fitting through my Bobamaker backplate (I did the same with my Z-6 jetpack). Can't wait to troop with this thing.

Just finished my first official troop! Went to a local con near my hometown with my garrison, got to meet some great people and take some pictures. Looking forward to doing more troops soon...Joining the 501st and building a Boba and Jango has been a goal of mine since I was still a kid so it is a great feeling to finally be a part of it.

A couple of issues that I noticed during this first troop:

1. I needed to lengthen the hoses on the left gauntlet - you can see the delta ring sticking out where they attach to the sleeve. I already completed this when I got home so that shouldn't be an issue anymore
.
2. My flak vest was slightly sticking out below the girth belt. To account for this I have been rolling it up so that it isn't as long, however I forgot to do that this time. I think it's time to just shorten the length of the flak vest and make it shorter so that this doesn't happen again.

Overall though everything held up really well!
