BH-51512's build thread. From trash to 501st

Neo Fett

Active Hunter
Hello All,
I've spent some time lurking here on the forums gathering information, reading tutorials, and building my own suit.
I finished version one in about 3 months and as you can probably guess it's not the best nor is it 100% complete.

Some of the big issues I have with it is the jetpack straps, the shoes and gloves, and the lack of a few components (such as wookie scalps).

So, with all that said it's time to tear it down and try again with my new found knowledge and experience of the first build. (Really I'm gonna redo almost everything except the armor paint).

Step 1: Jetpack

I wasn't a fan of how my first jetpack turned out. It was my first time using bondo and obviously making a jetpack. For a first try it wasn't bad in my opinion but there was for sure room for improvement.

The first build (pictured above) had my own strapping system (that was rubbish) and improper weathering. Time to start new!

First up the harness. I got mine 3d printed from toolguy301 on ShapeWays, set me back $130 but it is what it is. Straps came from StrapWorks. I learned how to sew for this one. Metal parts came from Full Metal Fett and Strap Works

This time I started with a less conventional half inch slab of plywood. Probably should have gotten some of that sintra stuff but this will do until I decide to re-do it again haha.

Starting to come together. Using a PVC pipe for the center rocket chamber thing (and the fuel canisters later on). Foam board and cardboard for the rest plus some 3d printed parts I'm waiting on in the mail.

And that's it for this weekend.

Time to fill in the gaps, I started with Bondo but didn't like working with it so I tried an epoxy sculpt and while that was better it still wasn't really what I was looking for. Then I thought of plaster strips. After the plaster I'm going to spray it with a sealant spray to give it a smooth finish.

the GREY apoxie sculpt is better than the colored ones....dont ask me why i think its due to the pigment ?!

Currently spraying it with automotive primer filler. Hopefully this will do what I want it then I just have to sand it down to make it smooth.

Good job on the scratch build! You're going to have a lot of sanding to do.

Okay so I have learned plaster strips and primer may have not been the best way to go but whatever - I'm rolling with it.

Here are the first and second layers of paint.

Got in the beacon light today. Taught my self how to wire an LED. Probably isn't the best looking job but it works. Hooks to a 9V battery.

Getting some more paint on it, I think I picked the wrong color orange; will probably re-paint.

For better or for worse everything is in place (except the decals). I think it looks pretty good. The rocket though, not a fan.

Eventually I will be getting the thrusters 3d printed to be more accurate; as well as a few other parts.

I've started work on my 'as close to perfect' jetpack re-re-build. This one I'm going to take my time on and don't plan on finishing it any time soon.
I've also been in contact with various forum members about gauntlets, wookie scalps, and better flight suit.

Well I got some MOW gloves in today and they are sadly too small so I guess I'll have to stick with inaccurate gloves for this next con.
In other news I got a huge sheet of sintra.

I'm going to repaint my helmet I've decided. It's the one from target that came out last halloween and it looks atrocious.

Got my gloves in today! It was hard finding a pair that fit....

Side note: Who has super detailed pictures of ROTJ gauntlets?
