Anyone use CAR headliner material to pad their helmet with?

A friend with a Biker Scout helmet showed me a mod he had done recently... He went to the local Hancock Fabrics store and bought car headliner material (it's smooth material that is slightly padded). He placed it in the top of his helmet (3 ply - folded twice) and around the sides and back (2 ply - folded once).

It looked very nice. My only concern is replacing it when it gets funky. When you costume alot, you have to be concerned about all of these soft parts that we have getting "the funk"!

I think I could glue Velcro inside my MSH, then make the headliner pieces, and sew Velcro onto them, then attach them with the Velcro. When the time comes for replacing them, it wouldn't be that hard to sew new pieces.

Any ideas? Anyone ever seen/tried this before?

I wear a hood under the helmet. That way, after each use, throw it in the de-funking machine.

I wear a gray Nomex balaclava, myself. Wicks the perspiration right off of my head and keeps me nice and cool and dry. Still, it gets to the padding since it contacts my balaclava. :facepalm

I used the liner of a baseball helmet (got it at Sport Authority). I velcroed in into the helmet and it was a perfect fit. Easily removed if I ever need to replace it.

The only helmet I have with padding is my scout helmet. I pretty much used JeezyCreezy's tutorial and gutted a baseball helmet. Don't really worry about the funk since it's a less absorbant foam and I wear a balacalva.

I wear a JEEP cap (think Radar O'Reilly from M*A*S*H*) in mine with no other padding or liner/strap. Works great. The crown/dome itself is a US GI steelpot helmet cut down.
