Help Needed with RS mini amplifier

Hey guys. I've been gone for a while. Good to see things are still going on over here!

So I've finally gotten down to the point where I'm adding some electronics to my mando. I have a voice amplifier from Radio shack, and some weird things are going on with it. This is the small one that takes a 9V battery. Its item #277-100BC if that means anything to anyone.

I've got two microphones, one for my computer that has an earpiece and boom mic, and another for my blackberry that has two ear buds as well as the mic. A funny thing happens when I plug it in to the amp - the only way I can get sound out of the amp is to talk to the ear piece! I took the amp into the local RS, and tried a different type of earpiece, and even tried a dedicated microphone. The different headpiece was the same story - the earbud portion worked and the mic didn't. The straight up microphone didn't work at all.

WHat am I doing wrong? While I can get by for tomorrow talking into an earbud, I really want this thing to work properly. Am I missing a component in the system?

Thanks,
Brian

Well, I pulled the mic off the headset, wired it to a new miniplug (a mono one like is called for on the back of the amp package), and still no dice. I tried the wires in each position as well, and no better. I'm wondering what other people are using for microphones with similar set ups? Do you need a powered mic?

I got through the halloween gig speaking in to an earbud as a speaker, but it was a pain in the butt keeping the thing in front of my mouth. I really would like to know what's up with the the set up I have....
