color meanings

JIM BEEF

Hunter
i haven't been online in a while, so please forgive me if this has already been discussed. i recently finished reading True Colors, and was excited to learn that Mandalorian armor color has different meanings. maybe i've just been oblivious to this, or maybe this has been something that was recently introduced. i'm curious now to know if there is a list of colors and their meanings floating around. any help would be greatly appreciated.

From what Kar'buir has written:

Black - justice
Gold - vengeance
Green - duty
Blue - Reliability

I may be forgetting a couple. I'm sure there must be meanings for other common colours like red, white, silver, but I don't know them.

According to Karen, colors never really had a meaning till she started writing about it. There's no real meaning to colors that she hasn't written about, and basically until someone does then your colors can mean anything you want them to. Most of the Mercs guys and gals use Karen's scheme and then most people ad-lib their own. The only color we use that isn't part of her list that we recognize is white for leadership.

Colors only have meaning to those who believe in said meaning =)

Different cultures interpret colors in different ways. For instance, in the USA, black is the color of mourning, whereas in China, the color for mourning is white.
I was looking around on color-wheel-pro.com, and while it didn't have the color copper, I picked up Red and Gold (which make up copper, I think):

Red
Love and War: Red is hot. It's a strong color that conjures up a range of seemingly conflicting emotions from passionate love to violence and warfare. Red is Cupid and the Devil.
Nature of Red: A stimulant, red is the hottest of the warm colors. Studies show that red can have a physical effect, increasing the rate of respiration and raising blood pressure. The expression seeing red indicates anger and may stem not only from the stimulus of the color but from the natural flush (redness) of the cheeks, a physical reaction to anger, increased blood pressure, or physical exertion.

Culture of Red: Red is power, hence the red power tie for business people and the red carpet for celebrities and VIPs (very important people).Flashing red lights denote danger or emergency. Stop signs and stop lights are red to get the drivers' attention and alert them to the dangers of the intersection.
In some cultures, red denotes purity, joy, and celebration. Red is the color of happiness and prosperity in China and may be used to attract good luck.

Gold
Riches and Excess: A cousin to yellow (and orange and brown) is gold. While green may be the color of money (U.S. money, that is) gold is the color of riches and extravagance.
Nature of Gold: The color gold shares many of the attributes of yellow. It is a warm color that can be both bright and cheerful as well as somber and traditional.
Culture of Gold: Because gold is a precious metal, the color gold is associated with wealth and prosperity. While all that glitters is not gold the color gold still suggests grandeur, and perhaps on the downside, the excesses of the rich.

Hope it helps!

What, Revelation is out already? And blue, grey and red are confirmed by Kar'buir? (I like that Shatir - Kar'buir; I was thinking of starting to call her that, but you beat me to it!)

Actually Revelation shows as being out, looks like I have a Kar'buir book to go buy today.

I think them having significance is nice, if she said empirically that all Beskar'gam was colored for meaning and never for taste it would be overkill, but having a "historical" or "traditional" meaning is not bad.

It's the series of star wars books that takes place after the Yuuzhan Vong War.
It mostly follows the twins, lots of Jedi in it though, and a healthy dose of Mandalorian goodness every couple of books.

Plus, Fury was the first book I ever saw that had Kyle Katarn in it. It's funny because the friend who first got me into the expanded universe by playing Dark Forces was named Kyle Korner. He liked it because the guy's name was so much like his.

The "LEGACY" Series is the series of comic books by Jan Duursema and John Ostrander that takes place 140 years after the movies, and chronicles the adventures of Cade Skywalker, Darth Krayt, and others.

The "LEGACY OF THE FORCE" Series are the novels by Aaron Allston, Troy Denning, and Karen Traviss that take place 40 years after the movies, and chronicle Jacen Solo's fall to the Dark Side, as well as Boba Fett's search for Ko Sai's research data in order to fix his ailing body.

Karen also noted in one of the books-- True Colors, I believe-- that it was quite alright for someone to wear a certain color just because they liked it, referring to Bardan Jusik.

I think it's neat that the colors have a meaning, but I wouldn't want to be shackled to a certain color scheme just because I fit the parameters.

Like I said it's good for them to have a traditional meaning as long as its understood not everyone is hung up on tradition.
