Starting work on first set of armor...few questions

Frerr Shj Edoc

Im using the trash can idea, but have run into some problems.my walmart doesnt have the sterlite 13gal or 8 gal, so i had to use a different one:p
and so far not to many problems. Just one major one. i didnt have the armor patterns so i had to make my own. and after this (and I know its not the best idea) but ive decided to go big with the helmet and armor. so, my questions are these: where can i get Sintra? how much does it usually cost? can i use it to make the helmet? and finnaly, can i use it to make the :jet pack? I now have all the patterns, so im good on that(y) also any tips for the first try(and remember, im 15 and impatient:lol:) Thanks a ton!

Hey, not sure on the price of sintra in the states but over here in the uk we get similar stuff which is very cheap so it shouldnt cost much where you are!

I personnally made my Jet Pack out of cardboard then a layer of fibre glass on the outside and then on the inside to strenthen, then lots of filler and hours of sanding. After that experience i would now use "foam board", easy to cut and shape, great for doing anything like the jet pack;)

Would of thought you could get foam board or an equivilant at any good art shop.

Sorry for the hijack but...

FettSniper - if you dont mind me asking please - where do you get yours? Im having a LOT of trouble getting Plasticard in Ireland - found a website in Germany that will ship here but if there are suppliers in the UK it might be cheaper :)

Sorry again!

Dave

I'm fairly new to this also and here are some things that I've learned, the hard way. Since you're impatient:), "For Sale" signs from Lowe's, Home Depot or Wal-Mart are pretty cheap, readily available and can be cut with a pair of scissors or exacto knife MUCH easier to work with than the thicker 3mm sintra or the Sterilite trash cans.

Try to buy a jumpsuit close to the color you want, because dyeing one does not always work as well as expected.

Check out SD 68 and Honus' threads on scratchbuilding helmets.

Keep at it. Add a little patience and you'll get something you're happy with. :cheers

Update ^.^ so far im pretty happy with it! though i didnt have patterns, i think it looks decent:D heres a pic of it so far(cutting out shoulder bells as i type) please give any comments on any tweaks i should make, thanks!:cheers

Very nice!(y) Good clean lines. You're off to a great start. :cheers Did you use trash cans for the armor? The knee armor is pretty easy to cut out also.

I've seen someone use the big plastic Kentucky Fried Chicken or Taco Bell cups as the base of their gauntlets, then build up from there.

I'd use the For Sale signs for the helmet construction. Some other plastics, like the trash cans, will not glue together very well.

To answer an earlier question, yes, you can make the jet pack from the same material. :jet pack

You may find this instructable useful, just substitute For Sale signs for the newspaper board.

A smoke grey or dark green welding shield is great material for the visor. They usually cost about $15 or so at a welding supply shop. Check the phone book for one. If you order one on-line, be sure to check the final price including shipping. Some people have gotten burned on that.

Looking forward to seeing more pix. :)

cool, ill have to see if ace or anywhere has a welding shield(verry small town). and im gonna pick up a few "for sale" signs at ace for the helmet and possible jet pack. Oh and yea, its trash can armor, but its really malible, so i can dent it and stuff. cut out shoulder bells yesterday, but theyre to big, gotta shave em down(used WOFs patterns and theyre to big :facepalm)

Here's a good start for scratch-built bucket info. The Mandolorian Mercs site has compiled a list of different builder's threads (mine included:)) and how we went about it.

One thing with your age, though. I'd highly recommend you be very careful when you work on this. I'm not trying to be mean, please understand. I'd just hate to see you get hurt doing some of the crazy things we do for our hobby and end up hating it.

Take your time and have fun.

David.
