mannequins?

You know you're right, Alc....they don't make a mannequin nearly my size...it would take twice the plastic to mold, and weigh 220 pounds....and the gut would be most of that weight....

Hey! I resemble that remark!

I've been thinking about making one of these for myself. I've also tried several routes to find a mannequin my size with no luck at all. They are always too tall (I'm 5'8") for my waist and chest size. (42" and 52", respectively.) I'm a big boy.

Great stuff guys! I'd be intrested to see what people are using as support stands (someone mentioned brackets allowing boots to fit?) and their work with padding. I was thinking about getting some pipe insulators to pad out the limbs and some "egg-crate" mattress padding (or soundproofing) for the torso...I'll probably be picking it out somtime tomorrow.

I feel your pain, Dave! I'm gonna try to make my own at first, because if you think about it, I could mold the body to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger's, and slap my Mando kit on it for one hellacious-lookin' bounty hunter!

Yes a bracket to insert the boot from under the ''feet''. That bracket is attached to a base plate for stability.

The boot fits underneat the PVC pipe and the pipe is attached with a metal bracket that has a ''wave'' in it to clear the shoes and fit inside the flightsuit just above the ankle.

I was lucky enough to find myself a little out of the way store with a friendly owner that carried mannequins in my height; 5' 5"...only catch was, they were female. :) Cost me about $125.00, cheap considering they were brand new.

Found me a pose that suited my Sandie and got that. Found another that i'll eventually get for me Fett, should I decide to retire him. :)

Here's mine:

As long as you don't start asking if your hips look too fat in your armor, you'll be fine.

I have one of these $40 dollar flexible forms which I intend to buff-up with some pipe insulation foam or packing foam to get somewhat a more anatomical figure. For the hands, I will try to make something out of wire and thicker latex gloves filled with liquid foam.

my suit is really... really... really heavy. i can't see the pvc route working out for me.

You may want to try ABS pipeing. looks like black PVC. i think that it's stronger than PVC piping, so it may work out better for you.

As an update on my project...I finally got around to adding some padding to my skelleton!

I picked up some thin tinish material, flexible and bendable Tin, and made a rib cage by wrapping it around myself in a cone type fashion...then i ran some coat hanger pieces through it as braces to make it flat and chest-like and bolted that to his (yes, it's a him finnally) spine. to add skin-like padding to the midsection I took an old quilted bathrobe and put that on him around the chest, arms, and midsection, folding the remainer up into the ribcage and secureing it with duct tape (which fixes everything)

BEcause my flight-suit is a snug fit, I have to put the arms on after putting on the suit...which can be a pain as they sometimes fall out. I did pick up a useful trick though. If you're trying to "pose" the mannequin without glueing somthing in place perminantly, such as if you're trying to check angles for arms or whatnot, but the joints keep falling apart...add a coating to glue while they are apart and let them dry. the joints will fit snugly enough that they shouldn't fall apart to easily.

I'll try to add pics, but the media reader on my laptop is on the fritz...so it may be a while.

So... I ordered my mannequin yesterday... And today he showed up. I didn't pay for overnight, but then again, they are in NY and I'm in PA. :)

If anyone wants to know which eBay seller I got him from, its displayfashion.
