Learning Rhino 4

I have access to a huge shop, with a TUN of nice cnc machines.

This week, for whatever reason, i decided im going to learn rhino.

I have done quite a bit of stuff in 3d, it was originally what I wanted to do for a living, but gave it up a few years back. I still do some eds max stuff, but nothing too time consuming. The last thing I did was a fully modeled speeder bike from the large scale toys reference. It turned out great, but I havent done anything since.

Now, im going to learn rhino? Why you ask? Because im going to be doing some aluminum parts, that no one else on the board has done yet:) It will save me from breathing in all the dust while sanding. So be on the look out.

That being said, anyone else consider themselves a 'pro' at this program?

Id like to be able to ask pointed questions about some of it, so that I dont have to look through tutorials to find what im lookign for.

Id love to have someone to work with on this stuff.

I use Rhino 4 and AutoCAD. Both are similar and use some of the same command set and logic. I should be able to handle most of your questions, though I am far from an expert in either program.

Rhino is a great program and transfers well in to CNC and STL machines.

What parts are you considering?

Well, at this point, im redoing my scope rings, mounts, etc in rhino, to cut them.

I also have a 3d scanner that will work through rhino, which is the big reason im getting this done.

First thing im going to work on is a nice cnc'd lathed rocket and the mounts.

Ive seen most of your work wizard, and its awesome man. Were your templates originally created in rhino?

Im barely through all the line tutorials, but so far, its pretty easy.

I created a raptor (airplane body) in max, but it wont open in rhino, so im going to redo it. It will take all the replacement parts for a F27 C including the engine and servos.

Were going to cnc cut one first, to make sure I have the wieght right, then cut molds for foam injecting:)

Along with about a bazilion other things:)

I havent seen you around in quite some time man. How have you been?

Wow! You have all the cool toys! If I had that kind of hardware to play with I’d never come out of the shop.

I didn’t have Rhino when I produced the templates, but I am using it to create the Jango gauntlet templates. I have been doing the 2D prelim work in AutoCAD and then I bring it into Rhino. I did a gauntlet rocket in Rhino from my CAD drawings (see attached) that I create a set of flat patterns. It can be cut out and folded up like a Pep file. I also created and STL version that was used to grow a Rocket, the final result looked pretty good.

Rhino will usually open mesh files, but you can’t do much with them once you have them open. As you have learned Rhino is Nurbs modeler and while there are programs for converting meshes to Nurbs they are way out of my price range and then you still need to rework and clean up the models. From what I have seen it is easier to rebuild the model in Rhino using the mesh as a guide.

I have been around, lurking, but the real world has been crazy. Just Friday we finalized the adoption of my second son. So at least that ordeal is over. Maybe things will start to settle down a bit. One can only hope.
