blinking led's circuit question

Hi All, I am in the process of playing with making my own blinking lights circuit.. however I seem to have the wrong components..

1st off they are blue led's and power source stripped from a key chain from Radio Shack...

from the positive terminal I went.. 10mfd 50v capacitor to a 1.0 k ohm resistor ( as sugessted by the guy at the electronics store)
Here's the problem..it doesn't blink? should it be a different cap?

thanks :cheers

Which blinking lights are you making (ie are they for a fett part)?
Or is this simply a generic blinking light you're trying to make?

Maplin sell some very snacky LEDs that already blink, all you have to do is hook them up to a PP3 battery and you're away.

What I am doing is a self contained led circuit, tilt switch in the RF.

I know you can buy them from Hyperdyne... but I wanted to make my own custom one.

well if thay have an outlet in the US Maplin sell tilt switches, coin cells, and flashing LEDs (as stated above).

Won't be movie accurate, but if you can get it working it'll be cheap as hell.

Here is a simple circuit that can be made up on some stripboard. This can be made to be big or small. You shouldn't have any problems making it to fit inside a range finder, or the wires can be ran through a hollow stalk and into your range finder. It can also be powered by watch batteries, or remotely with AAA's, or AA's. Total cost is less than 5 bucks. They alternate flashing at 1 second. You can change R1 and R4 to adjust your LED brightness. Lower resistance = brighter LED's. I ran this in EWB with a 5v battery, and it worked just fine. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, feel free to email me!

Cool Circuit, I'll have to try it out since I don't know anything about electronics, you made it look somewhat simple, somewhat:)

Thanks Buckeye_01 :D

Kivas,

The triple nickle is another good way. I didn't know everyone's experience level with this type of stuff, thus the simplistic design. If anyone needs any help, feel free to let me know.

Through my dad I was able to get some resistors, but don't know where to look in town other than radioshack for capacitors and transistors. My radio shack doesn't really stock anything like that anymore, wich is sad. Is there a good online resource for electronics any of you use.

Mouser dot com is my one stop shop for discreet components. You don't have to buy 500 of them to get em cheap. I would suggest changing R1 and R4 to 390-400 ohm to make those LED's really bright. The RC network is setup to run 1 second between alternating flashes. I've got this on my bread board and it works really well. You can put a toggle or merc switch in the circuit where ever.

I don't want to take any of hyperdyne's biz, but I may make a couple of these things. I have lots of components and strip board. :)

I am using the 555 timer for mine. I developed the circuit in EWB, then built in in breadboard, then finally perf board. It will run off one of those 12V batteries you can get at Radio Shack for car starter remotes. It is small enough to fit in the RF. I am still trying to come up with a battery holder though. Mouser is great because they don't have a minimum order. I have also used Allied, Digikey, Newark, Hosfelt, Jameco in the past. Can't remember off hand which ones have minimum though, usually $25 if they do
