Congratulations!
Good idea, the extra rectangles. And it's so interesting the oranges tones. It looks natural.
What did you use to paint, airbrush o brush?

If it was at least 2 1/4 in tall, I cut them up. Some were leftover pieces from projects from my husband. All that is pre-dyed leather scraps were bought at Tandy. The pre-dye stuff is hot pink, white, orange, dark brown, and natural. I had a few pieces of a real nice red color, but so few and small I could not find a reasonable use.

I plan on using an airbrush kit. Harbor Freight has a sale going on compressors and kits, and the stuff I bought (glass & metal-- no plastic) cost me about $110. Hoses, paint kit, compressor, and regulator/water remover. When everything is cut out and ready to be attached to other things (gauntlets and shin guards come to mind), I'm going to airbrush it all to keep it evenly dyed. I know this isn't something everyone can or wants to do, but I'm afraid if I dye as I go, I'll have different dye lot issues. Variances are key with parts of this costume, but some things need to be very close in color.

Annnnndddd... my neoprene is here. Wow, that was fast, folks. I'm changing my mind about Santa Claus, fairies, and dragons. There is no way I should have gotten it this fast, unless they used magic! Guess I need to bust my butt now and get some sewing done too! :)

I'm realizing more and more how difficult building a Zam is... not only is it hard, but it's expensive! Waiting for my next paycheck to buy more... I'm $300 in and I barely have anything so far!

Me too, Beyora. I spent a lot of money and I don't have something real in my hands. Everything needs something: dye, cut, paint, sew, modeling... and the list is so long. Fortunately, my husband has the stuff to airbrushing and some pvc to build gauntlets and shin guards (pvc? is correct? my english is...:facepalm) but the work is so hard. I get depressed some weeks ago looking at the bills, but now I think I should go slow and don´t weaken.

Seriously, don't slam yourself.

I've been fortunate to have gotten the right things to use at great prices. And alot of "found" stuff, aka recycled from junk and broken items, lies around my greenhouse and yard shed. I'm still spending money on items I can't make and don't really think my efforts would pay off (time, money, and resource materials) as I'm unable to spend ALL my time crafting do-dads. For myself, those greeblies, chest armor, and guantlets are where I'm looking at others to buy from.

That would be very much appreciated! (Don't kow if you meant this offer for me or for someone else posting to this thread, but hey! I'd love it!)

You can email me any pattern at md39@evansville.edu. I've got some leather already cut up, and I'm using an old leather coat as an inner lining. But matching it up to your pattern will help insure a good fit.

So, I just finished sewing my gloves that go under the gauntlets. It isn't a WOW! moment for most people. But I have to add that:

A. I've only had one sewing class and am extremely new at sewing,

and

B. I started sewing with leather, notorious for NOT cooperating with said newbie seamstress.

Therefore, it is with great relish I say I've created a useful and well constructed pair of (nearly) elbow length gloves. Wrist length glove bought, but the extra length was sewn on. Not the prettiest, but they aren't going to fall apart and functional is what I was going for. Pretty would have been a nice bonus. I'll update photobucket with pictures of them and a few more things, after I get a vest done. Someone mentioned about a pattern for a vest. I'd sure love to see it, if possibly soon.

In all honesty, it was a blouse pattern that had the right cut and seam placing. I modified it to be sleeveless with the shoulder caps and padding, so it was a bit of work beyond the base pattern. I ended up making a mockup first out of some old fabric I had laying around:

Ok, it's the shoulder part I wanted to study most. And to see if what I've done is about on target for accuracy. I think I'm on the right path.

JDFetts greeblies arrived today. I have to sa, JD, that I see what it is you don't like about that broach. But from my POV, I think it's fine.

Thanks!

15 new images from WIP Zam. The glove "plates" are leather, believe it or not. Silver dye and a sharpie make it look like metal plates. My shin guards are slow going but getting there. I've a few pictures of my virginal skills with sewing and airbrushing (wow, it's been a looonnnnggg time since I could relate THAT word with me), which I think turned out well. If anyone cares to know, waterbased dye in purple and midnight blue gives you a mottled effect which I felt worked well. I'm considering going back over the pigskin once more for deeper coloring. My long gloves now are ready to dye. I'll do it when I've a vest completed. Took two pictures of the neoprene (sunlit, and shaded) since some wanted a picture or two to see. One image of laying out a rifle, just to see how long it's going to be. It isn't a rifle, folks, it's a flagpole. Zam was playing tricks on you all. LOL!

And I am going to say, without a doubt, my holster is awesome. Of course, I'm probably not as critical as others, but when I placed it next to the picture from Dressing a Galaxy, well, damn!!! is all I could think. So, that's where it's at right now. Between Leia Ewok Dress, a logo design for Mos Espa Base, and Zam, I'm pretty busy. And that's my downtime after family stuff is taken care of first. Phhwweeww!
