Cruzer Jango gauntlet run!

Ok guys, small update: The parts are off from Dark-Side and they should be here either Friday or Saturday (fingers crossed). This weekend I'm going to finish up the hinge work (pulling the pins and hollowing out the hinges) and do minor clean up on all the shells (clean off any resin residue, fill large bubble holes, etc.). The shells will come rough trimmed and will need to be hit with a Dremel sanding bit along the fronts and back of the shells. There will be minor sanding, spot filling, and primering needed to get all of the surfaces smooth on both the shells and parts. This weekend I also plan to start boxing up kits so they're ready for shipping.

It's been a long stretch so I thank everybody for their patience in waiting for all of the parts/pieces to come together so a truely full kit could be offered to everyone. In my time here, I don't think this has ever been done for Jango.

I've been asked by a few people what "setting the pin and hinge closures" entails...but I gotta get to work so I'll add more in a few hours.

That's it for now.(y)

Glad to hear they got to you guys safely.(y) Isn't it amazing how light they are, and sorry for the delay.(y)

Ok guys, for the hinge and pin closure system here are the steps I took.

For the exposed hinge:
  1. Lightly sand and the shell edges flat with a sanding block and some 320 grit or so.
  2. Mark off recessed cut line (approx. 1/16" from edge) with some painters tape.
  3. Cut out the recessed area with a Dremel reinforced cut off wheel. This takes a steady hand and some patience. Use the tape line as a guide. Remove the tape when done. Do a little sanding if you went off track.
  4. With a flat file, give the side areas that remain and will surround the hinge a 45 degree bevel for opening and closing.
  5. Glue the hinge to the top shell ensuring it is flush along the recessed edge. I recommend CA glue (orange or better yet green bottle)
  6. Align and glue the hinge to the bottom shell ensuring it is flush along the recessed edge.
  7. Here's where some heating of the bottom shell may be needed. If the bottom shell doesn't line up perfectly with the top shell, then apply a little heat to the inside of the bottom shell with a heat gun or hair dryer and carefully bend it to where it lines up with the edge of the top shell. Hold it in place and let it cool or run it under some cool water to quick cool it. The two shells should then line up pretty good. A little bit of sanding may be needed to make the edges meet up if you want them perfectly flush with one another. More tweaking can always be done with more heat if desired.
  8. Ensure the two edges acceptibly line up and are flush with one another.

For the hidden hinge/pin closure (this is where the real fun begins):

  9. Temporarily tape the shells in the desired closed position.
  10. Position and center the hidden hinge (with the removable pin) inside the area where the shells meet. I like to have the link areas centered exactly where the two shells meet. I also like to have the pin handle about 1/8"-3/16" from the edge so it's not so hard to put it in and pull it out when suiting up/down.
  11. Mark with a fine tip sharpie (my preference) or pencil the outline of the hinge and holes on the top shell.
  12. Take the tape off the shells, separate the two hinge sides by pulling out the pin.
  13. Very very carefully align and glue the hinge half to the top shell, being sure to match up the lines.
  14. Match up the hinge halves and slide in the pin
  15. Realign and retape the halves together.
  16. Mark the outline and holes of the lower hinge half on the bottom shell.
  17. Remove the tape, separate the two hinge sides by pulling out the pin.
  18. Very very carefully align and glue the hinge half to the bottom shell, being sure to match up the lines.
  19. Say a little prayer or cross your fingers.
  20. Put the two sides together and see how good of a job you did!:wacko
Have I scared anyone?
If I forgot anything, I'll edit with bold print when I remember.(y)
To do this and take your time so it's as good a job as possible, you're looking at about 1-1.5 hours of work.

hahaha...thanks, glad your happy with them...they're not perfect, but I tried my best to make some quality pulls for people. A few small air bubbles are inevitable, but fixable.

I don't have the smaller hinge from Dark-Side yet, so I have to send those out with your aluminum parts. I would do all the trimming, drilling, filling, primer, etc. and then as soon as the Dark-Side stuff comes in I'll Priority mail them to you and you'll be ready for setting the hinges. I'd recommend holding off on the pin hinge and do the exposed hinge first.(y)

Also, before you drill the holes for the 4 darts and the toggle switches, I'd recommend clearing out some of the area on the insides of where those holes will be drilled because the fiberglass on the inside could cause your drill bit to move in an undesired direction sometimes. It's happened to me a few times and screws up a clean hole being drilled.

I can take some pics of that too this weekend if I'm not explaning myself good enough.(y)

so i should be able to get the rest of these together before the hinge assembly then? i was afraid i wouldn't be able to do much without that hinge....im guessing you hled the extra parts on with the screws only...also on the dart side...that hole for darksides dart still needs to be drilled out...as well as the hole for the second hose attachment in the back...what size drill beit did you use for those two areas?

i also noticed that you cleaned out the area for the darkside hinge on only one half of the gauntlet....do i need to do the other half?

I cleaned out that area to show what to do if the fiberglass resin is too thick. That side was thicker than the others so I did that for everyone. The other sides may be ok. It also depends on how accurately you want the hinge to protrude according to the ref. pics on the CD.

For those hole sizes, you'll have to check that post I made mentioning all the tools I used. I can't remember off the top of my head and actually ref. to that list too when I have my computer handy.

And yeah, you can pretty much primer before or after you install the hinges. It's really your call and just have to tape them off if you do it after.(y)

I updated post #170 with some pics, and I'll add more later. The hinge didn't arrive by today, so hopefully the beginning of next week.(y)

The Dark-Side parts and hinge arrived today, and everything looks beautiful. Kits will start shipping in small waves tomorrow.(y)
