Update 08/03/16 Fettastic GMH ESB Helmet Paint-Up

I laid down the red for the mandibles and I'm not 100% satisfied with how it turned out. In some light I like it and in other light I hate it. I believe it is a little too red for ESB. Probably going to remask and repaint.

Also did some airbrush weathering to the cheeks and dome but need to wire wool just a little bit.

Ok, I know what you are talking about. Yes the dome is actually shaped that way. It's only from the back at the correct angle that it is noticeable as you can tell. I was never sure if this is how the GMH is supposed to be or if it was just a shotty casting. This is the first casting I have ever seen in person so I am inexperienced in this matter.

I've owned two of the GMHs and neither exhibited this issue. I bought both of mine from Bill 'Asok' Warren. It might not be down to the casting. If the helmet is made from slush resin they can warp when exposed to heat. My MR recast was resin and when I was part way through painting it I left it on a stand in direct sunlight and the dome distorted with a lump in the centre. Luckily it took itself back into shape when left in the direct sunlight not on the stand. My point it you may be able to manipulate it back into shape.

Who made yours?

Yeah, I figured it was just a defect from the casting. It came that way from the get go. I purchased mine from I believe Class.Of.1984 off ebay. Yes, you heard correctly "off ebay" Lol. I purchased the helmet before even joining this forum. What happened was he sent me the wrong one. He ended sending me a blemished casting by accident but he ended up refunding me half of what I paid so I think I paid $100. For being my first bucket I couldn't be angry since I was on a budget anyways.

Ah, gotcha. Then obviously it's a casting/recasting issue. I wouldn't sweat the ebay 1984 thing; you can't act on information you weren't aware of can you and $100 is pretty cheap so you still might be able to iron out that distortion with a bit of care and a heat gun. Worth a go. Have a bucket of cold water on standby. works a treat.

Had a look at his ebay page. The one in the picture also has the same issue with the dome so I'd say all his helmets will come like that. At least you got some of your money back.

class of 1984 is also known as slartbartifast or something like that. He is known for very sloppy recasts of other peoples work.

He also has some other profiles on ebay. just fyi.

Your work on the helmet is coming along nicely though.

Alright team,

So I was unhappy with the red for the mandibles. Mixing paint, I'm finding out, is very difficult. It's very hard for me to tell if it's the tone I'm looking for until it is on the helmet, dry, and right next to the rest of the colors on the lid. Anyways I'm much much happier with my second attempt on the red.

I was also able to knock out the majority of the fine detailing topical work today!

You can see on the cat scratch where the paint peeled up from the masking fluid. I'm going to paint a few more layers in the gap until it is flush. Then hopefully use steel wool to hide the blemish.

Beautiful work. Got a link to the steps that you used for the paint job?

Sent from my SM-N910V

Sorry gtsetgo but I don't have a link or a list of the steps. I am however posting pictures in the order that I am painting if that helps. Is there any step in particular that you are curious about?

Paint looks amazing, it's really coming together. What visor did you use? It looks like the bottom mandibles are flaring out a bit more than they should be.

Yes, they are flared out right now. The lowest portion of the visor isn't connected yet but when I do attach it, it will pull it back into shape. It's the extended t-visor from I believe rembrandt enterprises.

Made some progress on the armor. I'm going to try and post some pics with more natural lighting once I've made some more progress.

Right on man!! Thanks! The GMH is a great cast I'm sure you'll like it. Who did you order the cast from? This forum is great for learning how to paint a Boba lid. I would recommend checking out Superjedi's technique seems to be flawless! This is my first go though so I'm sure my second will be much better than this.
