Superjedi's FPH2 for Postie

Thanks, guys! Yeah, the cat scratch is one of those detail-dense areas on the ESB helmet.

UPDATE 2: DAY 14

Using the long Labor Day weekend to good advantage. :) I got the small area around the turn signals done, and I also
filled the dent with silver. This just makes it easier for me to see the outline when I place the stencil onto that area.

I'll begin the dent and the "comet tail" coming back from it during the week.

Thanks, beetle!

UPDATE: DAY 19

Had very little time to work on the helmet the past few days. But over a few sessions, I finally completed the dent area!

IMG_3343_zpsuftgp0el.jpg

This is my #1 favorite feature on the helmet. I love the little flecks inside the dent, and the small details in the "tail" that
comes back from it. Still need to apply the pale contrasting gray, but that will come at the end of the project.

I'll be working on the big scrape across the top of the dome next.

UPDATE: DAY 20

Well, not as much done as I would have liked, but I got the big dome scrape finished. The reference shots I've seen for this area
are sort of lower angle shots, so everything looks different depending on which pic I'm looking at. But by using about 3 different
pics, I work on a portion of the area at a time.

This sets me up for killstripes! :) Those will get done over the next few days.

UPDATE: DAY 21

Three weeks in now. :) Finally got to use some colors other than gray and silver! I finished the killstripes
a little while ago. I've done a whole killstripe tutorial so I'll skip over the details for now. It's a whole lot of
masking for a relatively small amount of airbrushing, but it's gotta be done.

The fade is subtle and it should be apparent if you hold a couple of fingers up to the next pic so they cover a few of the
stripes in the middle of the run.

Next I'll add the damage between and around the stripes.

UPDATE: DAY 23

Managed to complete the damage around the killstripe region. There's lots of tiny detail scattered through the stripes, and of course
the "Scottie dog" above the stripes.

IMG_3359_zpsjineiuq8.jpg

A lot of the tiny silver flecks fade or brighten depending on how the light hits the helmet. Here's another angle.

There will be just a bit more weathering done at the end of the project. But for now. . . the dome is done!
I'll begin the cheeks next.

Beautiful paint job (y) (y) (y) Quick question Eric, are you using Maskol for your liquid masking ? My maskol seems to be drying too fast :unsure

UPDATE: DAY 26

Continuing to work on the cheeks--got the right one finished. There's a bit more in the upper corner of the outer cheek,
but I do that when I do the damage on the mandibles. Here are a couple of shots.

Left cheek is up next.

I do brush on the black (PRR Green). It's a Polly Scale acrylic and they're some of the best paints I've ever used.
They self-level very nicely, and they're pigment heavy, so it doesn't take a lot to get great coverage.

Its really too bad that they are discontinuing those paints...

UPDATE: DAY 27

Really humming along now. :) I got the left cheek done late yesterday. This is another of my favorite areas on the ESB helmet.
As I've mentioned in other threads, the damage seems so angular compared to other sections. The damage on the outside edge
of the inner cheek is a strange, slightly darker/greener gray than is found anywhere else on the lid. I mix up a custom shade for
each helmet. I begin with a base of the same gray that's used everywhere else, then I add a few drops of the darker green from
the rear panels, and a couple of drops of the dark PRR green used on the outer cheeks. It's just mixed by eye until there's a good
contrast.

Maybe you noticed something else in the picture above. . . RED!! I masked everything off and shot the base red for the mandibles. :)

IMG_3373_zpsyl2odsc5.jpg

It's a ton of masking for a relatively small amount of airbrushing. But that's the way it goes.

IMG_3375_zpsplduyfyp.jpg

Once the red has dried I'll begin the gray/silver/maroon damage on the keyslot area, then the band on the rear half of the helmet.
I'm a glutton for punishment, so I save the mandibles for last!

UPDATE 2: DAY 27

I'll bring the weekend to a close with the completed keyslot area.

IMG_3376_zpsoju7zccl.jpg

This shows the first application of the maroon/purple color found on the red areas of the helmet. It's a custom mix that I make
using a base of Polly Scale PRR Maroon and BAR Blue. I add just enough blue to slightly darken it and tip it over into the
purple range. It's really a very "dull" purple shade, but it contrasts nicely against the main red.

More on the red band as I have time this week. :)
