Recommended primer?

Is there a recommended primer for helmet/ armor paintups?

I previously used Mr surfacer 1200, but now I'm looking at the duplicolor self etching automotive primer. It's like a weird green...

Any tips?

i just use standard krylon grey primer for pretty much everything. Never had an issue. I feel like most of the more fancy/expensive stuff isnt worth it unless you NEED whatever the specialty factor of the product is. Krylon grey always did me well for helmets and armor.

I like Duplicolor myself. It's pretty rugged. I usually use the self etching kind only on cold cast helmets, and the standard gray primer on resin or gelcoat.
Krylon's pretty good, too. I just prefer the Duplicolor.
I think that the smoothest primer I've ever used is the Tamiya fine surface primer. But it's pretty expensive.

Rustoeum primers in brown, black, or white have all worked well for me. Haven't had any problems with them.

Like DV stated the specialty primers are not needed unless being used for what they were intended.

On metal and fiberglass the duplicolor self etching is great stuff. That weird green grows on you once you see how smooth it is. For plastic and resin I use a clear adhesion promoter first, and have used rustoleum grey, and dupliclor white both with success. Always test first though so you do not have to start over due to a bad combination.
