Have they worked out how to reproduce it yet? That is the final hurdle but I know they are going to do their darndest to make this thing right.

See the difference? ....no, neither do I!
(Course the grainy awful picture below doesnt yeild much detail)

Actually I wonder Lee how many really clear pictures of the ESB paintjob you had. Of course I am speaking with no knowledge of what is on the reference cd.

There are a few places that I wonder about though. "sigh" Hate to ask this cause other people problaby know and it might come off as criticism which it is not; Were there more than one ESB helmet used on screen? If so which pictures did you use?

I used what was on Brak's CD and screen caps as well as a few MR provided me. Now keep in mind when doing a paint master not every single little details will be produced so I tried to capture the major ones and please remember I did that in like 5 days from receiving it to shipping it back. The second helmet that I painted will be making it's rounds here soon and that helmet is far more detailed and 90% real scratches I even layered the mandibles too.

Great to hear Lee! I was just throwing those thoughts out there to see if you were basing it on the hero helmet pictures, or a more in depth study of another ESB helmet MR provided. Cant wait to see the new paint job. (btw do you happen to know how many ESB helmets survive? I guess its just the one from what I've seen but surely they painted others?)

Not sure how many ESB but only two were painted to look this way so I would say two. Damrus this is going to be a massed produced helmet.

Oh yeah! most of the photos provided to me from MR were of the PP3 that I believe Jason Eaton photgraphed and they were great pics but unfortunately not the screenused one. However I did gleen info on weathering and how they did it. This will be evident on the 2nd helmet I painted which should be going around to the cons and such. I laid off the weathering on the first helmet slightly to ensure I made the factory's job a little easier in interpreting shapes, color and scratches.

Impressive as all hell! Congrats to RS and anyone else helping him (if any) for a great job they are doing to get MR to be able to get a faithful replica produced.

Now, here's my question:

As good as this is going to look, will it be up to 501st standards without a repaint? With them as "hoity-toity" and strict as the can sometimes be, it makes me wonder if it'll be worth it. On a shelf on display it'll be fantastic and would look perfect when costuming but will it get "Oh, great suit but he cheesed out when it came to his helmet." comments behind the wearers back?

This is not meant as a bashing of this helmet or RS for his work on it in ANY way as both are OUTSTANDING and I WILL be getting one anyway!

It's a good question and I think it's as much a mystery to me as it is to you folks. I think the scratches should be rendered pretty well based on the concept process discussed with me. I think if anything the weathering might be a little light and that's it but that is just my theory. As far as 501st approval I have painted several helmets for 501st members and to my knowledge they received no grief to this point but I doubt if they are that strict but I have no idea.

Does anyone have pics of the PP3 helmet they can throw up? If that is the majority of the pics RS used then it should be compared to that instead of the ESB helmet.

Maybe the painters in China will come up with some layered template paint by number thingy. :confused I will in the meantime give them a thumbsup(y) benefit of the doubt on a decent paintjob until i can see the final product. They can copy anything over there it seems.

RS: you told us the correct colors to use and i am even more impressed how you threw them down.(y) WOW

I think what Lee said was he didn't use the PP3 helmet photos so much for reference for scratches (since they are quite different than the ESB hero), but rather for a better idea of how exactly it was weathered and such. So it should compared to the ESB hero helmet, but also as he said there are a few details left out because the factory job won't pick them all up anyway.

All very good here... By the way if someone cares to they can put up a really good comparison so I can take my awful one down. Maybe I will anyway because it makes me embarassed whenever I look at it. I've said it many times to myself; TIME FOR A REFERENCE CD KEEGAN!
