Hi,
so I've decided to start my my ROTJ costume and want to start with getting a nice helmet. My price range is around 500 U.S. Dollars, so if there is any recommendations or where I can get one it would be appreciated.

Well you can easily do it for 500$ if you paint it yourself. If you want someone to paint it CORRECTLY it will cost significantly more. I think the general cost ranges about 800 to 1k with shipping. Most helmets can be bought for about 200$. Painting the helmet correctly is probably the hardest part of painting the costume. I know I paid about 1k if you factor all the accessories I put into the blessed thing.

Look to these folks for a helmet and painting -

Animefan (did my helmet)
Darth Voorhees
Bobamaker

Expect at least a 4 to 6 month lead time until completion. With Bobamaker you are lucky if its done within a year.

Depends how comfortable you are with it. I have experience with painting, but had never painted anything like this before and it turned out alright. I highly recommend using an airbrush as you can get much better results with all the fading involved.

Ok, thanks it's a good start for me. How hard would it be to paint? Would it be worth it just to have it painted?

Like DeathProof stated it depends on your comfort levels. I have done models for years since I was a kid, but I knew I didn't have the eye for detail required to get it dang near perfect so I "outsourced" it to someone who does is consistently. There are a lot of tricks to getting the helmet correct especially since most of the colors linked in build threads are no longer available. Animefan and Darth use their own custome blended paints for various colors being used. I also was going for 501st credentialing and wanted my helmet as exact as possible. You might not meet this criteria, so painting your own helmet might be a good idea. Bottom line is it comes down to what YOU want and your satisfaction level with the process.

If you are looking to paint the helmet there are other helmets available for purchase/painting. Fettpride puts out a great ROTJ helmet now that many consider to be currently the "best" out there...but there will be some serious lead times until you are able to obtain it (unless you buy off of someone else here via the cargo hold). Whatever you do...Do NOT buy a helmet from ebay as you will 95% of the time be throwing it out to buy another one from a dented helmet guy I mentioned earlier.

While getting it painted "correctly" is awesome for sure. I had a lot of fun doing all the painting myself. My concern wasn't to be ultra screen accurate as it was to have fun with a hobby. As far as food helmets go, 2-300 is a great way to start and I guess it depends on how long you want to wait for it to arrive

Ok cause I was looking on ebay lol, but I am really new to TDH so I'm waiting to be able to use cargo hold. As far as time I was hoping by the next 3 months to at least have ROTJ helmet ready. Do all these guys you mentioned for ordering have a website or do I just search them up here. Thanks a lot for all the advise as well is really appreciated!

You can use the cargo hold, you just can't post in it. If you see something you want in there, pm the seller.

I painted my helmet, which was a pepakura I built. It was challenging, but a lot of fun. It did take a long time, so factor that in.

Bobamaker has a website...his prices are very high and he's UK based so shipping is expensive. The others have cargo-hold sales threads...but it's simply best to PM them. Animefan is Canadian which adds a little to shipping costs (and he's Canadian so he's a little nutz from the cold up there) but you can easily PM him on this site...he should get back in a day or two. Darth lives in NY so if you are US based and east coast shipping will be really easy.

...you don't really think we all live in igloos, drink beer and play hockey all day, do you? :)

Well I know Animefan didn't get a delivery from me for a week due to crazy weather that didn't allow the canadian post office to deliver mail to him. It began with an "A" When the weather gets that crazy drinking beer and playing hockey helps sooth the soul.
