My first helmet just completed (Newbie)!!

OK. I finally figured out how to attach the helmet mechanically...3 mm plywood glued with loctite superglue gel (thanks for the glue tips guys) to the inside of the helmet and tiny screws.

That is one battered helmet. The scratches amd battle damage look to be some of the best applied that ive seen, love the gouges and the reworked dent.

That is probably one of the best DP95s ive ever seen.

Yeah, I was trying to find the definitive way to get the helmet to look scratched up, and could not find a good tutorial, so I did it the way I thought would look good:

I gouged and scratched the helmet with files, retooled the dent, painted it silver, applied my colors, then scratched off all the scratches you see with a sharp pocket knife. This revealed the silver underneath and kept the paint layering correct. Any areas that I scratched too much and went through the silver, I just retouched later. The key is NOT to use silver that is too shiny.

I see lots of guys using silver leaf, and shiny silver paint, and I think these helmets look the least realistic.

Paint a piece of metal with layers of paint, tie it to a bycicle on a long rope, ride down the street to scratch the snot out of it, and then leave it outside for two months. See how shiny the metal scratches are then!! They definately don't look like silver leaf!! Even aluminum will tarnish and get dull.

I like the blasted in dent. the gouges gives a nice 3d impact appearance of like a moon crater.
You did a great job making your helmet "weathered". I see what you mean on the silver dull paint because you don't want a weathered helmet to look like it just came out of battle and all this just happened. Your thinking reminds me of a car with peeling paint. Once exposed for some time...the primer will eventually dull then the bare metal will start to dull as well.
