Masters Replica or Substitute?

Hey gang, I am finally able to purchase my first helmet. Being an avid Boba collector I dont want to half way do it. I will either want to pay someone to do a screen accurate paint job or I was thinking of purchasing a Masters Replica Signature edition.

This may be a dumb question... Are the masters replica's spot on when it comes to screen accuracy? Please let me know your advice. Thanks

Robert

Well, short answer: No.
The paint scheme MR chose to go with (long story. . . several threads devoted to this subject) is called the Pre-production 3 paint job. While it is very similar (VERY) to the ESB screen-used paint job, they are not the same.

if you not planning on buliding a costume then MR is fine.. your a collector its what its worth to you. If you are going suit i would totally invest in doing it yourself. The helmet is the signature piece to your costume wyou have to ask yourself would you take pride in it if it was store bought?

Doing your own paint jobs and scratch building is what this hobby is about.

also note that the MR has a problem with the visor. you will need to do some work on it to make it look right... that work will involve anything from a heat gun to a dremel, so it's only for the brave and will destroy any collector value.

there are tons of great posts about it all around the board. this is a pic i did from my thread on the subject:

I agree.

Before I found this site I made a few mistakes. I bought a horrible looking helmet off EBAY and spent way too much on the piece of garbage.

Then I buy the MR Sig addition only to learn later about the pinch! Damn!

In hindsight I would have bought a helmet from one of the incredible artists on here but I found this site too late. I decided to "void the warranty" on my MR helmet and fix the pinch and add a new visor. Now when I see it everyday I'm very pleased with it sitting in the case. There are some more high end helmets and paint jobs out there that I'm in love with but I'm really happy with my MR now.

w34, that's a nice job on the MR lid!! :cheers
That's how it should have arrived to everyone to begin with!

yeah, they are really nice looking helmets once the visor is fixed!

be careful with the silver paint on them... it comes off really easily! i put some masking tape on mine and pulled the silver right off with it!

thanks superjedi!

I really appreciate it!

I agree TK7602 I was really worried about the silver coming off cause I ended up handling it more than I wanted too to correct the shape of the front. I kinda feel I was lucky none of the silver came off when I was exerting pressure for the jb weld. I treated it pretty gingerly though and kept it on a soft blanket while I worked on it and where ever possible I used a cut up t shirt to cover my fingertips while pushing on it.

Can you describe how you modded that mandible? Did you apply heat to help it move? Or just "brute force?" :)
I've seen someone else who used a heat gun or hair dryer to help bend it into the new shape after removing some of the small screws that hold the visor in.

I originally cancelled my pre-order for this helmet because of that visor pinch, but I've seen some awesome re-works lately.

a few people have asked so I just wrote up what I did in a new post here.
