Helmet Decisions...

Ok so I hate to be "that guy" but I feel like I need to post this.

I'm back on here after a decent hiatus (college will do that to ya!) and am ready to start really looking for a bucket.

When I was here last it was back when FP was doing the original run of the GMH so I'm up to speed on that and I know that Asok is selling it now.

Now here is the age old question.

Which bucket should I get!?!?

I know the GMH has a rather awesome lineage (PP2) and when it first came out it was as close as you could get to having a real Fett helmet.

But what about the other two buckets that Asok sells, what is their story?

And I know that FP doesn't want to openly discuss the details of his FPH2-ESB so if someone would be into PMing me about it that would be great. Is there any other buckets that FP sells or has he started to take a more minimal approach to his inventory?

I know that some buckets differ in size as well and was wondering if that was the case with the ones mentioned above?

I'm indifferent about ESP, ROTJ, etc so that wont play a huge factor in my decision.

Thanks in advance!

Well I think it all depends on what you want. The FPH2 comes in both esb and rotj (or at least it will pretty soon if it doesn't alreay). They are great helmets. The GMH is a great helmet but is more on the small side of helmets. Asok makes what used to be called the MR budget helmet which has the ears precast into it. I believe the only other helmet Asok sells is the Jango bucket. I believe FP still makes some of the MR premium kits which came from a different source and have the ears seperate. I hope that helps a little. If you need anything more specific let us know.

It is smaller but not so as to be much smaller; it's also a different shape from the MR based offerings (slightly). I don't think there are any serious shortcomings to the GMH as many of the GMH as ESB or GMH as ROTJ demonstrates and I feel the size differences are pretty minor. I also am of the opinion that many times that a size comp has been done between a GMH and another helm that the GMH hasn't had its ears on which only serves to overstate the size differences.

anyway the size differences such as they are are pretty minimal and I think it may be down to the GMH and MR derivatives being from different lids (pp2 and pp3 respectively). I think the overall sizes are pretty similar but the shapes are slightly different. In any event the GMH may simply suffer from a tiny bit of generational shrinkage which is common to any molding process. The MR are all from a scanning process so there would be less dimensional difference although some of the finer details were lost as scanning does not replicate detail as we'll. Of course the fine details of the GMH will need to be obliterated for either a ROTJ or ESB lid, which is a bit of a shame really.

Casting process causes shrinkage over the recasting...so after casting a cast of a cast of a cast you get some NOTICABLE shrinkage...which is why the GMH is smaller then say the actual helmet or a first generation recasting like the EFX casting taken by Gino last year.

I only say it is smaller because I have a fiberglass one from FP, a budget from Asok, a premium from FP, and a FPH and have had them all on. I am not saying it is tiny or anything like that. It is just smaller. With the budget and premium my jaw is not close to being exposed and with the GMH my jaw line is pretty close to the bottom of the helmet and that is without padding in any of them.

It is smaller but it's not like comparing an original mini with the new BMW mini and it is noticeable but I don't think it's as great as has been represented.

Whatever. I guess my opinions don't matter on this even though I have all the helmets I mentioned and can compare them. I guess pm me if you need more info primalscream9.

The GMH is def smaller whatever the reasoning is. Chris had some pics somewhere comparing the FPH2 to the budget and GMH, and it was noticeable in the side by side comparison pics.

FPH2 on the right, GMH on the left.

Noticeable.

The MR series of helmets (prototype/production) and varying generations of castings of each, fall in between these two.

Give or take. They'll all vary a tiny bit because they're hand laid fiberglass (sometimes you need more catalyst in winter months resulting in a negligibly smaller casting than summer months). Nature of the beast.

It really depends on the wearer, I WOULD NOT let JC27 buy a GMH....nor would I say Fettpride himself would be able to wear a GMH theyre just BIG tall guys....it would be reverse bobble head...lets not get caught up and start fighting with eachother. Lets keep it civil and friendly. Thanks guys.

Personally I would go with the fph2 or the premium from Asok or animefan. I have an Asok lid and it fits fine.

You know, Justin ... Dom just implied that we'd look pinheaded wearing GMH's.

Or, that we're just freakishly large :p

Well Dom is a little guy, I bet he would be a good appetizer. Me hungry me want food and a fph2 helmet for my supposedly gigantic head.
