First attempt at making ANYTHING. EVER.

New Hunter
So I am putting together my first helmet in what may become a string of many helmets in the future. I have absolutely no crafting experience of any sort, nor anything artistic whatsoever. So this is an interesting challenge for me. I'm gonna be taking a whack at making a Boba Fett helmet, but I will not be making any emphasis on ESB or ROTJ. This is going to be a simple Fett piece of work and and will be giving it my own twist, while still maintaining the identity of the helm. This thread will be used to document the progress as I go along with the build. Here's where I'm at so far.

I purchased a blank helmet kit off of Ebay. Came with a white resin helmet and parts for the range finder assembly. There is an ''FP" logo molded into the bottom visor area that is supposed to get cut out. I'm going to assume that's who made the mold? Either way, I was impressed with the shape and quality of the helmet. There was a little bit of warping on the dome shape, but nothing extremely noticeable in my opinion.

I used a dremel tool (circular blade) to cut the visor out as accurately as I could.

If you're wondering what that gash is on the visor area, I wanted to try and imitate some type of lightsaber damage. A quick little scrape from a Jedi that came up short. YES, that is my toilet.

I made a wooden helmet stand to use for painting applications. 5 dollars of wood and a few nails did the trick. First thing up is the primer. I am using all rattlecan for this paint job. I picked up a handful of Rustoleum colors at home depot for about $3.47 a can.

After the primer settled, I sprayed Rustoleum "Metallic" to be the base undercoat for all of the visible scratches and paint chips.

Tomorrow morning I will lay down some liquid latex on all of the battle damage that I grinded in various areas. Then the main green coat will immediately following.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Again...This is not intended to be either ESB or ROTJ. Just a fun Boba to break me into the cosplay world for the first time.

Wow dude fett pride is the name of whom made the bucket I have only heard good things about him though in the future I would stay away from eBay as its full of re-casters and ,few reputable vendors. Great start though and welcome to the dented helmet[emoji4]

that's looks like a fettpride budget helmet recast by slartibartfast. fettprides work is top of the line awesomeness. slartibartfast has been a thorn in the side of him and tdh for several years, stealing other peoples work and passing it off as his own (but not even going so far as to remove the original makers "logo").

but as far as your paint job goes. when painting the silver layer, i highly recommend first sanding your (at least two coats of) primer with 400 then 800 grit sandpaper. then put down 2-4 light coats of gloss black. then, once that is fully dry for 24 hours put down two coats of silver, let dry for 24, gently sand with 0000 steel wool, clean the dust thoroughly, then put down another two coats, wait another 24 hours and sand again with the steel wool and wash away the dust one more time with dish soap and water. at that point you will have a surface ready to put some color on.

Yeah, I'm going to agree that this is possibly a recast now that I'm looking at it in the garage a little closer. A few slanted angles and measurements being on the finicky side. Oh well. Safe to say I learned a lesson.

I sprayed a clear coat on the metallic coats to fix the finish that was coming from the can. There's enough coats of it to take some steel wool and prep the surface before the incoming color.

Definitely not fiberglass, that's for sure. Man, I kinda feel like a dumb dumb for not doing enough homework before clicking the buy button. Should've read a little more into it. Box came all the way from La Crete Canada.

I took some steel wool (0000) to the metallic and clear coat before wiping it down. I sprayed a generous coat of green to top the metallic.

I plan to take a lighter shade of green and mist over the lower mandibles and the dome. The rear panels will remain the same shade of green as this first coat.

As soon as that dried enough, I laid down masking tape around the visor area to spray a nice coat of red.

And now we wait to dry.

Finished throwing on some of the other layers like the upper and lower mandibles (black, green) Right not I feel kind of ehh about how it's coming out. I feel like it has too much of a cartoony look to it. Maybe the green isn't dark enough? Or am I just overreacting early because I have yet to peel the latex off and blackwash it?
