UPDATED 9-20-05 with pics of supplies used.

I will be posting pics of my ESB bucket as I complete it over the next few weeks. I recently won a auction for a MARROW SUN bucket painted by MARROW SUN himself. It is such a awesome helmet I doubt I will wear it. I have decided to work on my own helmet and use the MS helmet as a reference.

for pics of my painted MS helmet check this thread

so here we go.

1. pics below show my helmet after dremel work has been completed

2. Bondo has been applied to rough areas and sanded

2. grey primer has been applied

3. finally I sanded it with 320 grit paper to make it extra smooth

I painted the bucket with Panzer Olive Green. I actually thought about using masking fluid for the battle damage but decided not to at the last minute.

Looking good I can't wait to get one, but why did you decide not to use the masking fluid.

since this is my first helmet I wanted to play it safe and just paint everything. I was worried the masking fluid would cause me problems.

I got all of the base coats of paint done.

colors used:

1. Panzer Olive green for the dome and cheeks
2. Boxcar red for mandibles
3. Euro Dark Green for back of helmet
4. PRR Brunswick green for inside of cheeks
5. panzer dark yellow for rangfinder ear

I used an airbrush for the dome and cheeks and mandibles.

I did experience paint that peeled when I removed the tape so I had to paint part of it by hand.

It seems the paint peels pretty easy because of the Testors Chrome I used as a base

And you said you had no skills! :) What helmet version is that?

You may be already aware of this, but you'll have to paint the edge of the visor area again once you cut it out. I know alot of people leave that area uncut for stability concerns while painting. I made the cut before doing ANY painting, and braced it from the inside with a small piece of spare plastic and some JB Weld. Just a thought, to each his own, etc...

It looks like you nailed the colors, too. Way to go! Keep us updated.

Eric...you were right....I had no idea how much fun it would be to make my own helmet.

not sure which helmet it is. I got it from Kevin H.

OK you guys are going to love this. Battle damage time. I found a weird way to create some of the damage. I actually tried using a knife to scrape some of the paint off to reveal the silver chrome. Not only did it work great but it gave it a real authentic look to the damage.

you are quite correct, that looks very realistic with the way you are revealing the orignal testors chrome instead of puttign extra paint layers on again

looking good so far, keep up the good work

Yeah, I did this to mine. I have always thought that the helmet woul dbe FAR from smooth. All the damage to mine is just that, true damage, so, kudos to you for doing that. Nothing beats true, REAL damage.

Wow man, I have no idea why you bought a painted helmet  . That looks awesome!! Keep up the good work!!
